Learing a new skill is always satisfying. In your first example there's still a white border. Before you make the selection in Photoshop, you can increase the tolerance value to select more pixels.
The border looks like plain white but when you zoom in you'll see there are grey pixels too:

Rsoul i was just looking the video tutorial and saw 50 % in tolerance, but when i use my photoshop cs3 ( i know its outdated) i don´t see the option tolerance when i select the magic wand:

They may teach that at one of your local universities, technical schools, or extensions. Other than that, Adobe has online training for Photoshop, for example (

As to 3d modeling. Again it depends on the tool you have. If you have 3ds Max, then again there are online classes offered. If you have Anim8or, there are some for that too. Blender ... etc.
