I have written a guide for setting up Thief for playing Fan Missions for a complete beginner. The guide can be found on my website here: (
https://nickdablin.wordpress.com/how-to-play-thief-fan-missions/) https://nickdablin.wordpress.com/how-to-play-thief-fan-missions/
Any feedback or questions, please let me know. Hope this helps out any new taffers who want to get started.
Cheers,
Nick

You should add the information that T1-2 work flawlessly under GNU/Linux through Wine.
And mention that T1 and T2 missions are not compatible and that be wise to store them in different directories.

Heyy I recognize more than one mission in the title pic! And I'm glad to see Whispers in the Desert there, one of my favs.

Excellent work, Nick! I'll sticky this for a while, and add it to the mega-sticky for posterity when I unsticky it.

One of the options in INSTALL.CFG of Thief should not simply be overwritten. It's the language line; it should stay exactly like the game sets it. If, for example, you have a german Thief 1 installation, it will be language german, and changing it to language english may leave you without menu texts, or even crashes to desktop.
The player may, however, change the language line to something like language italian+english+german, which means that the game will try to use italian content first, then english (if italian content is not available), and then german. Can be useful for anyone playing missions in a language not supported by his/her original game. The last language usually should be the one the game has set in the beginning, and serves as a fallback.
The "Auto-search bodies" option in Thief 1 NewDark is also a Thief 2 feature, like weather and fog. It will usually be ignored by Thief 1. I do not know of any fan mission which uses it. Doesn't hurt to enable it, though.
While the NewDark versions of Thief 1 and 2 work with Wine on my machines with the Linux distribution I use, "OldDark" installations do not always work here. Also, only FMSel (recommended) and DarkLoader (which I do not recommend any more) work here, while NewDarkLoader and AngelLoader do not work under Linux here so far. I assume some replacement of the .NET framework would be needed, but have not been successful with that. TL;DR: The road to Thief may still be bumpy on Linux, but could be worth a try.

Made a couple of updates. I'm not going to cover Linux setup as I have no experience of Linux and therefore no way of troubleshooting it. Seems pretty niche, but if anyone asks about Linux off the back of this tutorial, I'll direct them to these forums.

Sounds reasonable. Everything else I read in the current version of your tutorial also sounds OK.:thumb:

I never allow overwriting my settings, if FM ZIPs contain those files I delete them because I don't want to have them manipulated. Never had any probs with this strategy.

I never found out what
Auto-search bodies effectuates.

In Thief 1, once you have a knocked out or killed person carrying something (e.g., a purse or key), you have to try to center that object in view until it lights up, and then you can take it. This can be a great hassle since the unconscious/dead body tends to highlight instead, and then you end up taking the whole person instead of just the key/purse/whatever.
In Thief 2, there is this "auto-search bodies" option, and if it's turned on, clicking on the body of the unconscious/dead person will first give you any object the person carried, and only if you have obtained everything you can from that person, the body itself will be lifted by Garrett. Much more convenient.
Since NewDark, the Thief 2 engine is used (with a few modifications) for Thief 1 as well, which leads to some options in the menus that have no function for Thief 1. "Auto-search bodies" is one of them.
