Thanks Bäuchlein, now I know that, after all these years ... :D

While the NewDark versions of Thief 1 and 2 work with Wine on my machines with the Linux distribution I use, "OldDark" installations do not always work here. Also, only FMSel (recommended) and DarkLoader (which I do not recommend any more) work here, while NewDarkLoader and AngelLoader do not work under Linux here so far. I assume some replacement of the .NET framework would be needed, but have not been successful with that.
TL;DR: The road to Thief may still be bumpy on Linux, but could be worth a try.
I can't comment on NewDarkLoader, but AngelLoader works perfectly fine for me on Linux. I just installed it in the same wine prefix as the game and it's been all good.

I've had mixed reports about AngelLoader on Linux. I myself haven't been able to get it to run at all, but I know very little about working with Linux. Some people have also not been able to run it, others have. But I've also gotten reports that even when it runs it doesn't always run or look completely right. Dark mode in particular appears to be very far from perfect (see (
https://github.com/FenPhoenix/AngelLoader/issues/81) here).
I'd love to get it working well on Linux, but my use of the .NET Framework makes it a very difficult proposition. I also can't move to newer .NET versions because important parts of the dark mode code break on them (even on Windows).
There's also a perfect storm of other reasons why Linux support is difficult (including rtf display). FMSel may be feature-light, but its great advantage is its simplicity, which allows it to be both extremely fast and extremely compatible.

In my case, problems with replacing the .NET framework in Linux are certainly preventing me from using AngelLoader and NewDarkLoader. And .RTF file display, especially in Wine, does also cause some problems here. On the other hand, the computer which I currently use for playing Thief cannot use an up-to-date version of Windows, so I have to cope with the incompatibilities for the time being. If I'm lucky, though, things will change in about one and a half week.
If we continue this Linux-centered discussion, we should consider opening a new thread and going there.

It's too bad FMSel doesn't have an option to show the mission info string/text in a window automatically, rather than having to manually look at the info each time. I miss the old way Darkloader (?) did it.

If you can use AngelLoader or NewDarkLoader, then your wish comes true immediately.;)

I've been out of the loop for a little while. I was under the impression those were t used anymore, thought they had been deprecated in lieu of FMSel..
I will look into those -- thanks!

Hint: AngelLoader gives you a lot more comfort than NewDarkLoader. On the other hand, you can have all three (FMsel, NewDarkLoader, AngelLoader) installed at the same time. You can even switch between them and still use your old savegames, etc.. Since one has three FM loaders then, one might call this a "Win-win-win" situation.;)

I'm glad I posted the problem then. I thought they had been "lost" due to all the changes made to the games' executables and such. Thanks for the info!
