Or soon to be known as The Best Fucking Sequel Ever?
Seriously. Not fucking around here.
I was a fan of the first movie. I liked the setting and the premise but also a couple of boilerplate themes were done a good service. It was cute and fun, the kids have it in the replay list so it connects there too. However, it didn't rank amongst the best of Pixars.
But this movie?
We are a good leap ahead in time and in the first few scenes you think you've seen this kind of sequel before... The protags in happy times soon to be disrupted by a new enemy which can allow hijinks to ensue... So far, so sequel.
But even in these scenes, they are shot in a way that just strips the "sameness" away, they are captivating in spite of themselves. You're quickly sucked into the main plot (no first act establishment), and that's when the movie starts to hit you with unexpected sidesteps... This continues while the main villain arc bubbles in the background.
Not ashamed to say I got choked up three times during this movie.
The themes they tackle are far more universal and challenging. And they are not done in a cookie cutter way, but effortlessly integrated into the stories of these characters.
It's also fucking hilarious, lots of great set ups and pay offs and some decent one liners too. Not to mention just plain fucking cool... The scene where they first see the ice fort... The creatures circling toothless (both underwater and in the cave)... The way when his mum rattles her stick all the dragons silhouette her in flaming maws... Toothless finding his "special power" at the end...
This movie has the rare magic. Go see it.

Cool, my kids are really looking foward to this one, the original has been a dvd fave in our house.

I loved the first one - glad it got a good sequel :)

Not my typical genre, but loved the first! Good to know I can look forward to the second!

I'm kind of surprised to hear that. The pre-release hype they were attempting to generate the last time they showed the original on FX made the movie look completely.....unoriginal, dull, and stupid.

First one was fantastic, really looking forward to this now.

All the ways they could have sequelized the title of the original, and in the end they just stick a "2" on it. Laaaame.

I absolutely loved both movies (just saw #2 yesterday). But, as much as I LOVE Gerard Butler's voice (a real panty-wetter, and it's a crying shame when he's cast as an American in films, IMO)... WHY do the Vikings have Scottish accents? And only some of them?
faetal on 29/6/2014 at 21:42
Probably for the same reason all dwarves in films have Scottish accents too (with the occasional Welsh or Irish one thrown in for equally ineffable reasons).

Well, why not Scottish? Viking settling and inter-marrying into Scotland (nevermind the raiding and killing) was so extensive, that any given Scot is most likely a descendent of Vikings.
