Well, I don't think Garrett is heartless, but I don't think he's hiding it either. The way I see it is that he doesn't really form bonds with people not so much for emotional reasons, but practical ones. He has a strict code to live by and can't have people holding him back.
As for stealing from the rich... it only makes sense. I doubt Garrett makes a concious decision to steal from the rich. It just makes sense to go where you can get more money. Garrett being an expert thief and all, I would expect that he goes after the big guys instead of every house he passes.
Anyway, Garrett seems to steal the goods more for the sense of accomplishment and fingering the booty than the actual money he gets for it. Money isn't as good to hold as the golden plate that just smells like profit.

why does he not look for a girl or woman to raise a family...I mean why such rebel and dangerous behaviour?
Because then we wouldn't have a game, now would we? :p
Joking aside, the cowardice discussion where the AI will call him "coward" to provoke him (again, the player, really) reminded me of the very first time I played thief. One of the rat creatures searching for Garrett shouted out the "fight me, sneaksie coward!" line and I almost ran out with my sword brandished right then and there, 'cause NOBODY calls me coward. :cheeky:
So yeah, it proved a kind of interesting knee-jerk response in me as well. Nowadays I'll react to the coward slinging by just thinking "Whatever. You're just pissed 'cause you can't find me. HA!"
Therefore, in regard to the hiding and running away instead of fighting, backstabbing, etc--I wouldn't call that cowardice, but rather intelligence. :thumb:

Considering the situations he willingly wanders into, he's no coward. He's not a fighter and he's trying to stay unseen. He's got places to go, things to loot, and fighting doesn't calculate into that.

The last thing Garrett is is a "coward". So he doesn't fight at the drop of a rat turd. Big deal. When he does, it's when HE CAN WIN, or when he must.
There are old thieves. There are bold thieves. THERE ARE NO OLD, BOLD THIEVES.
Garrett is not "in the business" of warming a cell in prison, or being an ornament at the end of a hangmans rope, or being a head shorter than he was to begin with.
In simple terms, you don't take knife to a gun fight, and you can't steal often, or successfully, if you "Boldly go where no intelligent thief has gone before". and start fights you can't win.

It's worth adding that stealth takes a great deal of bravery. Don't believe me? Go pick a home and break in. Take all the time you need. You can even try it when you know no one is home. Scary stuff eh? It gets your adrenaline pumping just to step out into the night knowing you're up to no good.
Now to make the comparison a bit more relevant, you'll need to break into a place with active security guards on patrol that will kill you on sight. The best comparison we have is a camp of bandits in the third world, or something similar. I promise every single one of you would be sweating buckets before you even hopped the fence. I know I would, and I train this stuff pretty regularly.
It takes balls of steel to put yourself in situation where you're surrounded and completely outmatched, and you realistically *can't* take anyone out because as soon as you do everyone will know an intruder is around.
Martial Artists train reflex and reaction, so fear doesn't factor in. They feel fear, but their body does goes into autopilot. Sneaks don't have that luxury. When someone is walking your way and you know all they have to do is stop and *really* scrutinize that shadow to see you. Seconds become hours and all of a sudden you have all the time in the world to consider just how screwed you are if they happen to spot you. You want to run or react in some way, but you know the best bet is to just remain perfectly still and hope for the best.
In my mind, Garrett is a very brave man.

(note to FBI-bot... no one is actually going to do that... I hope... :ebil: )

Whoa! That's bravery! Heh heh. I guess she's not in "Nymph" mode there.:ebil:
I forgot to mention I concur with Lady Taffer. It really is a taunt to provoke the player.

and face the world only at night?
Cragsleft Prison's missions is not at night :p, Garrett does his missions when all is dark to help him being undettected... in a conclussion, Garrett loves the darkness and not the night itself.
