All the official trailers and the games' intro movies always show bloodshed and action, even action that cannot be executed in-game, against AI with weapons never seen in-game, to draw in the majority of gamers who are not into sneaking but are promised killing ability.:sly:

I think it should be noted that the best insight we have into Garrett's persona when it comes to his desires, priorities, and methods
during missions is the Mission Objectives the game provides - especially those given on Expert mode, since Garrett himself is an expert. From the Expert mode Objectives, we can gather the following:
-Garrett loots as much as possible during his jobs - especially gems (Lost City, Rumford's).
-He hates leaving a mess and avoids killing humans under any circumstances.
-He does favors for friends (Basso), and even Keepers (retrieved medallions).
-He has an eye for women at times (Basso's sister, Viktoria - no pun intended).
-He believes in luck, despite his skepticism (Lucky Hand of Glory, Watchman's Grave).
-He's a daredevil, but he does take precautions (holy water, fire arrows, etc).
-He enjoys making fools of his enemies (stole Ramirez's fire-poker and belt-purse).
-He gathers information whenever possible (info on Constantine, Trickster's plans, etc).
-He takes the opportunity to steal unique items (First Hammer, Navigation Globe, etc).
-He has a conscience (saved the world three times).
Can anyone else add more?
Knowing all this, it might be kind of interesting to ponder over what Garrett's MBTI personality type might be.. if you're into (

Whatever gets him money/stuff/info, and whatever ensures he will keep getting money/stuff/info, so he can spend it on making it possible for himself to go out and get more money/stuff/info, while taking his own dang risks to get that money/stuff/thrills/info, confident as he is about getting money/stuff/thrills/info in dangerous territories. He don't need no conscience to meet the same dang ends, but it's there, but seriously, those feelings make zero difference on the fact he will get more stuff/money/thrills/info, it just gives padding and justification. Nothing he did wasn't 'cause he had no choice and he was gonna get to get more stuff/money/thrills/info.
And he doesn't like no one meddlin' in his affairs.

What i suspect is that Garret is in truth giving away a huge chunk of his winnings to charity because after stealing scepters, paintings and superprecious artefacts he still lives in a crummy apartment and are unable to pay his rent.

Nah, he spends all his loot buying equipment for the next heist, to get money for equipment for the next heist, to get money for more equipment...

No, he has put away huge amounts of money to get information for a future mission. All this time he's used all his spare cash to bribe important people, to get maps and schematics for a complicated heist, his biggest job so far, and that mission is what Thief4 is all about. ;)
