How would you rate THIEF: The Dark Project/Gold?...
massimilianogoi on 19/10/2009 at 03:20
I imagined it -_-
I imagined that coming here I would have found the greatest part of the votest on masterpiece.. I voted too for masterpiece, but because I like the entire saga, and I gave to them the same vote, but I don't understand what has this chapter better than the two other ones (especially more than Thief 2)... What it has of so better?

If you still don't know by now, you never will. It's been explained ad nauseum, sometimes very well, about what is better each game and why T3 can't compete with T1/G/T2. Asking why after all these years, when you've been told why, is bad. No need at all to start another innocent flamewar when there are a thousand threads to tell you what you want to know.:sly:
I know you know that people don't like T3, and I don't know why you never saw the reasons.

... that's not what he was saying, jtr ...
For my part, massi: largely nostalgia. I'm not going to pretend to be objective about this. Thief was the game that turned me into a hardcore gamer. You literally can't do that twice.

Idem for myself.
jtr7: I wasn't referring that Thief 3 was the better, this time. :tsktsk: I just wanted to understand why T1 is more appreciated than Thief 2.

And as jtr *just* pointed out, the topic has already been explained at great length and in great detail. You just are too lazy to search for the information that you repeatedly seem to desire. Either that, or you just like to "see yourself type". :wot:

I for one preferred Thief 2 because of the advances made on the engine and gameplay, however most people found they preferred Thief 1's story and setting (no mechanists). While id have to agree, Thief's later levels were survival romps so i greatly appreciated the change of pace Thief2 provided with many more mansion and thievery missions.
Its a simple division then. If you enjoyed the story, spookiness and setting most youd probably give the edge to Thief. If Thief left you wanting more burglaries then Thief 2 was more your cup.
Theres no real 'controversy' about any of this however; almost all fans rated both Thief and Thief 2 highly

I just have a problem with making a real difference between excellent, brilliant and masterpiece. Along with the numbers... well OK, but the numbers themselves would be also different since 8/10 isn't excellent or even very good. But nevermind.

That is the important question. Thief 3 can't stand firm (in my opinion) to the older games,
but how do they compete against each other? I voted 10 for TDP and 8 for TMA. Was I blinded by the absence of Hammers and Undead or the fact that TDP was the first game and it brought the revolution? No I wasn't. In fact the iconic vision of Karras and the mechanists will forever be all time classics. Thief Metal Age brought an in depth look of the Pesants - they were not a major faction before the game came out.
But The Dark Project sets up a standard for what is Thief in its essence. The Hammerites, the highest voted favorite faction in the community, were never as cleanly described as they were in Thief 1. It is a mythological game, with the sense of shadow and mystery, plus crime organization, undead hunting, with some humor thrown in. Yes it has some natural advantages over TMA. It describes Garrett in his early life: how he was raised in the streets, his naivety towards Constantine, how he lost his eye - all prime class novel material. But it was the execution of these factors that lead to the masterpiece. Don't get me wrong, Thief 2 serves its atmospheric purpose as brilliant as its supposed to - it gives a nice mechanical, twisting cog like, divine feeling in the player. But TDP has that mystical... cosy feeling about it.
Note that I'm not comparing sound or vision. I'm also aware that there are guys who feel the same about Thief 2 and don't appreciated Thief 1 as much, but that is awesome. We are a community and our variety makes the legacy of Thief what it is now.
