We've discussed these games ad nauseum.
These threads are just like old ones, just like parody threads we've had before.
If you're happy with the cycle continuing get ready for the next one already.
With all due respect Subjective Effect I'm not testing your nerves, but can you show me a previous thread that is "just like" this one. I'm sure you (whoever "we" means) have discusses the games thoroughly, but maybe we haven't discussed them enough. And if all 3 threads are enjoying a wealth of votes and posts it means that there is still interest in the matter.
But even so, you have the right to comment that the games have been discussed for so long now. But calling someone a Troll and saying "ffs", seems like an emotional and provoking behavior.

Ok, youve both made your points, yes, this has been seen before but no, the OP does not appear to be trolling. Objections raised and noted.
Now on the graphs, its interesting to see the spread but Thief 1 probably has a bit of an advantage in that it was the game that launched it all, so even those who prefer Thief 2, like myself, would rate it 9 or 10. But id actually rather play Thief 2.
For those who didnt rate Thief 2 highly at all; what would you rather have seen?

[Posted in the Thief 3 version of this thread, but hey I'll post here as well :) ]
Thief 1 has, as irR4tiOn4L has said, the advantage of being the fore-runner and it created the Thief world, so many people remember it fondly. The developers were worried that people wouldn't "get" the concept of a sneaking game though, so they added some "Tomb Raider" style levels since that was selling like hot cakes at the time. Thus Thief 1 has a range of level styles, expanding the Thief universe widely.
Thief 2 was more of a collection of missions joined together by making up the story to fit the levels - so individual levels were generally better in Thief II, but the overall story was weaker. So the question then becomes whether people emphasise level design or overall story-arc when gauging how good a game is. Personally I prefer story, so Thief 1 is slightly higher on my ranking. But both are important, so will score highly in a poll like this. It's just a personal preference though.
[just want to ask jtr7 if my memory is correct about the Thief 1 & 2 levels being designed!]

Start a thread asking anything and you'll get replies, no matter how inane it is. I've done this as a proof of concept before when similar repeato threads were in vogue in the past.

I try to emphasize on both level design and story. Where you said it yourself that the Thief DP story was broader, I think its mission design is quite comparable to Thief 2. Well if you consider the number of objects, texture res and details Thief 2 takes the cake. But on my own personal opinion, Thief 2's missions are more monotonous, a lot of them being just multistorey buildings with relatively 20 rooms each floor, with little to no variation in furniture and wall texture. While Thief DP's different maps' areas variate a lot and seem really atmospheric. I get thrilled every time I play Bonehoard or some non-undead missions - Undercover or the Sword. Still, this is my oppinion and that is maybe why I like Trail of Blood and Precious Cargo the most in Thief 2.

I gave Thief 2 an 8. Frankly, I wouldn't change Thief 2 for anything, as I like it a lot. I just think Thief 1 was a masterpiece, and Thief 2 was more hastily done.

I think it can be summed up by saying that Thief 1 was more of a woven tapestry in its execution, whereas Thief 2 feels more like it was laid out on a grid with lines drawn between missions to connect them. You can definitely feel the difference between the two games, yet despite this they're still both amazing. Thief 1 is the stronger of the two as far as the marriage between narrative and missions goes.

...on the other hand TDP's story is such a cliché that you might find yourself playing half of the game with the uncomfortable feeling that you have to do something you wouldn't do yourself, that is, doing missions for a guy who will surely turn against you afterwards because he looked nothing but evil right from the beginning. I'm usually more impressed by a story which I cannot understand at first than with a predictable one.
However, the most important thing for us is to accept different opinions without denying someone the right to be a true Thief fan.

You've got a point Beleg. Thief 2 story was a lot more confusing and tangled.
@ Subjective Effect: Taking it ti PMs. Don't want to bother all the other people.

Gets a 9, for me. I love the story, but I don't think the level design was quite where it should have been. Too many Burricks, the levels felt a bit Indiana Jones-ish, and... fireballs that shoot other fireballs?! Someone call Super Mario!
Platinumoxicity on 22/10/2009 at 05:23
Remember to rate the game as a game, not as part of the Thief series. As a game TDP is 9, (TGold is 8) as a game TMA is a 9, it's not a perfect game. As a game TDS is 7 or 8, pretty good.
But don't rate the games as Thief games. Just games.
