If you were a mansion owner how would you best protect your gold and scepter ?
Here are my ideas:
-All stationary guard will have to be in a corner, facing an entrance. His head should always be backed against a wall, so that he can´t be attacked from behind.. The alarm button and the light on/off button should be right next to him.
-A patrolling guard must have most of his patrol under the view of a stationary guard, making an attack against him less likely. Guards shouldn´t patrol alone, always in groups of two.
-I would never lock my keys and leave them in a table. Keys that are not being carried by me or my guards should be left in a keyroom, witch will be obviously guarded by a stationary guard.
-I would never, ever compromise my safety by writing useful information in readables. I could however leave wrong information around, like a plaque saying 'Treasury' in front of the guard´s barracks. The guards would be informed about this but never allowed to write or talk about security info.
-If I have access to Karras technology then the buttons to turn off cameras would be in only one room, and watched by another camera...
-My ultra mega fancied diamond scepter would be in a secret room while a faked one would be in the main throne room and constantly guarded.
And that´s how I would try to stop Garrett.
Would I succeed ?
And, hey, post your defensive ideas too.

Nukes.
Failing that, tripwire bombs.
Assuming we need to be within the framework of Thief...
Always have guards in groups of threes, facing like so as they move:
<- -> <-
That way they can always cover each other.
And the valuable items would really be fakes on pressure plates that would set off mines when disturbed.

I'd welcome Garrett with doors that fly out into space once he has opened them, followed by a Mechanist Cerub in front of him.

Only one door into the mansion, guarded like crazy. It would be quite easy to stop Garrett, really, if you were prepared to inconvenience yourself enough.

A gas arrow would take care of that =P

Well, Garrett is the opposite of a moth so how do you catch a Mr. Garret? With shadows.....
Big treasure in well lit room full of electric lamps, one single shadow in the middle of the room with a gas grenade on the floor. Wait and enjoy. :p

I'd do absolutely nothing to the mansion, but one of the golden candlesticks would have a slow poison on it so when he picked it up, it would KO him when he's on his way out.

100 percent electric lighting.
Indoor patrols at most two swords.
Outdoor patrol, two swords and 1 archer.
Archer lookouts.
Muti-visual arch with all cameras.
Main Control room for lights/camera in heavy guard, plus heavy doors.
Helmets and flares for all guards.

Not if the guards are inside the door and there is no way of opening it from the outside ... :)
Although mind you, Garrett did adopt the disguise approach in Undercover, so it's probably not cheating to allow him to do so in this case too.

Kill him before he finds out about your mansion.
Oh, and don't have off-switches for your lights / cameras (and have an emergency generator if he takes out a power plant to get into your mansion)... but killing him would be the best way.
