Tripwire gun. Set up primitive firearms, or failing that, crossbows, to tripwires. Pulling on the tripwire pulls the gun to face that direction, then pulling further pulls the trigger.

I usually find,
"Oi! You're knicked Taffer!"
works pretty well.....
Maybe followed by, "Don't mess around sonny, we're the Sweeney and we 'aven't 'ad our breakfast yet"
(Oh well, please yourselves!)

if cannon-armed steampowered bot'S didn't work stationary tripwires also not.

All my floors would be tiled and I'd have all lamps, no torches, lighting up every dark corner in the house. And all the gaurds would be placed near doors with their backs to the walls and have those helmets you can't blackjack through.

So that would be either Barbutes, Aventail, Sallet and every other medieval helmet, because successfuly knocking someone out who is wearing a 14 to 16 guage helmet would be impossible and would alert the guard just by the effort....'CLUNK'
I say this only on the grounds I've done it myself and it's not very clever (big guards get angry). Why not just poison him?

This would be interesting for missions or a contest. Make a reasonable mission, where the creator of the mission is the mansion owner. Whoevers is more challenging, wins.

But that would need limitations because a dromeder can just put ten guards in every single room of his mansion, make all floor a marble floor, put cameras everywhere...

thats why i said reasonable mission. make it realistic. They can only have a certain amount of guards because in real life you wouldnt hire 200 guards.

I'd just spend my money (and no not in useless golden decorations), so there's no reason for him to rob me :)

Realistically, a noble would be expected to supply an army to support their king. As this is Thief the Baron of the City would not expect any less. So 200 guards would be accepted. What you need however is trained guards that don't ignore the torch that has been extinguished right next to them.
