I never played thief, but relax, I'm considering it since I jioned this forum.
System Shock 2 however is the most horiffic scfi thriller I have ever played. Three reasons, atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere.
SS2 creates the most unique atmosphere of any game i ever played. The excellent visual effects and supurb sound files make the game number one on my list. The game does an excellent job of developing the plot to form a scary yet satifying game from start to finish. In my own words, I have never been afraid to go through a door on any game before. System shock 2 made me hesitate, and think twice before entering rooms. A word of advice though you'll need a fast system ie good video card and good sound system to really enjoy the full game experience. With my SBlive, ot sounded like the game was happening in my room thanks to EAX.

Play Thief 1 first, definitely. Better atmosphere and storytelling than its sequel, and better cutscenes. Besides, you'll ruin the storyline for yourself if you play Thief 2 first. Thief 2 is still great, though, with a better end mission, and some great levels like Life of the Party and Trail of Blood and Blackmail.
I'm sure that if you enjoy the First Person Thinker type of game, you'll at least like the Thief and System Shock titles. I believe Thief helped to inspire the creators of System Shock, and both games most likely helped to inspire Deus Ex. I really love this trend of gaming; Quake and Diablo are addictive, but not my style. I like challenge, variety, originality, good gameplay and a good plot, which both the Thief games and System Shock 2 have in large quantities.
So get them. Hey, they're probably stinking cheap by now! :D I think I got SS2 for $13.
