Twitter told me that it's been twenty years today since the fall of the Third Reich... Yes, it's been
twenty years since Cpt. William "B.J" Blazkowicz brought down Adolf Hitler and the whole Nazi regime to their knees. OH YES INDEED, it's the 20th birthday of
Wolfenstein 3D!
\:D/ I wouldn't start a thread like this for just any game, but I think that Wolf 3D deserves a mention...
See mum, I didn't become a serial killer (or a neo-nazi) in my later life, even though I was secretly shooting evil mutant zombie nazis (while humming along to the (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horst-Wessel-Lied) Horst-Wessel-Lied) as a child when you weren't looking. Instead of becoming a monster, I developed a lifetime-long love for map making. I spent many hours with the awful map editor creating my terrible little Wolf3D maps which I don't think I ever even played - I just loved making them.
I find it quite amazing how far computer games have come in "just" twenty years... Wolfenstein 3D felt like something
really special all those years ago, but here we are now with our almost photorealistic games and stuff, something that I could never even have dreamt of back then.
If you're feeling nostalgic, or just in the mood for shooting some nazis, there's a free browser version that you can play: (

Or if you're feeling
really hardcore, you can play (

1D and see if you're up for the challenge! :p

Excellent. I can't wait to receive the next instalment via the post although I'm worried that it's going to push my system over the edge in terms of dimensional requirements.

Haha, sort of a cute gimmick for a minute or two.
Well W3D was a milestone, although let's be fair Ultima Underworld led the real, if overlooked, revolution am I right? Still W3D is definitely cool, and put 3D on the gaming map in a big way and deserves big credit for it.

The innovators usually aren't the influential ones, it's the popularisers.
Eg Namco's Kill.switch may've taken Metal Gear Solid's corner view and mutated it into the cover system used by 3PS action games of today, but Gears popularised it. (But then again Kill.switch may've been inspired by Namco's Time Crisis, rather than MGS.)

Happy birthday Wolfenstein. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. Mountains of fun to play to this day.
