Ilanita, I am in an identical position to you: I've played all 3 Thief games back when they were new (I have T2 and T3 on CDs) but only now have discovered the wonderful (and, yes, overwhelming) world of FMs.
For me it was actually a bit of self disappointment to realize how I missed all this for so long and a sad realization that I will never be able to play all the great FMs with the little spare time I have.
going by recommendations (incl' The Mike's and other top lists) so far I played
T2X - my top favorite so far
The Night Falcon
Ominous Bequest and Broken Triad
Ecipsed - found the mantling to be too hard at some places
now playing Rose Cottage - damn too scary for my feeble nerves... (and haven't met no zombies, Ilanita)
I am filtering FMs that have a walkthrough since almost always (actually always0 I find I need one (Ecipsed only had Ricebug's hints and it wasn't enough :()
btw, am I the only Israeli here ?

Rose Cottage has no zombies, but I wouldn't recommend it for the faint of heart.

yes, I discovered that Rose Cottage and horror themed missions in general are not my cup of espresso. Still, the visuals and sound in that mission are first rate.
as for the next mission, I was thinking about Fables of the Penitent Thief b/c it looks so different

Fables is a most excellent mission in terms of story and gameplay, although it is definitely not a standard style mission so it might put some people off. But the creativity and technical execution are off the charts (as with all of Sliptip's missions).

Ilanita, welcome on board.
I was in similar position like you some year ago. And I have somewhere written, that when I discovered the world of FMs, it was like opening an ancient tomb I never knew about.
When you will play more and more FMs, you will also discover that each author adds something new and something different to the way of playing, searching and interacting with characters.

...full match in my case also. Had to start it earlier (while I was a student with a room of a free time). But on the other hand, now it's a really pleasant hobby (not sure that I could be so involved earlier), even though I have to fight for this free time to play ("real life" takes it mostly...).
...still under a big shock after L'Arsene campaign. Now trying to catch the recent ones (Sturmdrang Peak is downloading now) but not forgetting of the "Must Play" list (T2X, Black Frog, 7 Sisters, etc...oh my...)
Huge thanks for all those who are spending their time in continuing the Garrett's life novels!

I second this, wholeheartedly. Fables was one of the most brilliant and creative missions that I've ever played.

I was just introduced to FMs and so I've been reading up on it in here, and the info is overwhelming, to say the least.
I've already played several FMs and I am in complete heaven that FMs exist. I think I'm going to go by that amazing list that someone took the time to make, where they are all categorized by where the mission is set in.
love these forums.
Welcome friend ! I have been playing thief for almost 15 years and I'm still overwhelmed. I haven't been able to play as much lately so I am like 40 missions behind on T2 alone. I am so happy today to find out Dark Mod 2.0 was released....it was just too buggy and a pain in the butt when fused with Doom 3. 2.0 works perfect so there's another 30-40 missions and T3 missions...I think I played 2. Im not sure how many FM's there is for that. I noticed cheep missions has not been updated in quite awhile....could someone please turn me onto the latest go-to place for Thief missions?
Its kind of like stumbling upon a hidden treasure huh? Enjoy ;)!!!! May I recomend the Dracula and Countess Bathory campaigns....great stuff.
