SPOILER ALERT:
SPOILERS AHEAD
I finally got around to plaything Thief 1 Gold, after spending days tweaking it and making TaffinMouse, getting crt and etc. The only thing I'm missing is an audigy2 (in transit :cheeky: )
I have many general gameplay questions and some specific mission questions.
General:
* Why is there no chime when I completed one of my objectives?
* Why doesn't eating food heal me at all? Expert = food no heal?
* Pickpocketing when ai alert, isnt supposed to work? then why does it get highlighted?
* why is stealing an AI's key, sometimes traps them inside locked door (prison in mission 2), and sometimes doesnt?
* I'm having great trouble mantling, what's the trick?
Possible mods?
* When selecting an arrow, not change the lightgem unless the bow is pulled.
* Is there a mod, that will allow you to lock a door by reusing a key on it?
* player's gear to carry over to next mission
* gold carry over from all previous missions
* gps mod- show arrow of player's location/which way * player's facing in map menu
* is there a fix, for wen lockpicks are selected in item, door/box opens anyway if no picking is needed? It's really annoying having to USE a pick on a chest/door only to find out it's really open, you just had to change from the lockpick to another item
* EXPERT difficulty, but remove/decrease the loot ammount. I get immersed and beat an entire level, just to go back and run around wildly, bunnyhopping avoiding enemies to find a $20 gold vase :( Runs the immersion for me.
Mission 1 Baffords
A Classic. PLayed the demo dozens of times when I was young.
Mission 2
-I lured a zombie to fight a hammerite. Is Thief the first FPS where NPCs have non-scripted combat vs each other and player? (all 3 of us are each others enemies)
-What's the backstory with the lucky hand? (or will i find out about it later on?)
-If all the zombies and guards are killed, wer do the released prisoners run off to?
Mission 3 bonehard
-wow wtf awsum, spooky stuff , not BAM! scaraed YA!! resident evil style, but a psychological state: 'wen is theis going to end, i feel uncomfotrable , small and defenseless' tops mission 2 10x over
-why doesnt the walking guy on fire change my lightgem wen he's close to me? gameplay or engine restriction? has mod community got around to 'faking' dynamic (lightgem) lighting in dark engine games?
-hiding that $20 vase behind those boulders in the trap room (u walk in, 3 small borders fall behind u blocking the door) was really uncalled for. i play on expert, not 'archeologist" :(
Mission 4
-is that annoying servant woman in the kitchen supposed to get spooked and call for help at any sound shes hears? a
-is the techno music supposed to keep on looping forever after entering casino through air shaft?
The Mage Towers
IN difficulty menu selection,
Why is expert font small and differnt than hard and normal ?
What is your general gameplay strategy?
At first, I was quicksaving/loading like there's no tomorrow, trying to ghist through caught. Then I did the save and KO pile method, where by then end of the level, every dark courner had a pile of bodies, and I could just sprint through the whole level since everyone was KOed. Now I just run away from a conflict, I'm trying to find some middle-ground between immersion and annoyance. I don't remember having this problem in Thief 3 (even with ultra difficulty mod)

* Why is there no chime when I completed one of my objectives?
Hmmm. I thought you only got a chime with bonus objectives. In TMA it's optional to have the goal notification sound on or off, but TMA was made with a different editor, with more things added, and some things taken away. Just remember that TDP is older and has many differences.
* Why doesn't eating food heal me at all? Expert = food no heal?
Standard foods don't heal you at all in TDP, only TMA. Later in the game you'll find special food that does.
* Pickpocketing when ai alert, isnt supposed to work? then why does it get highlighted?
When an AI goes alert, it still lets you know there's loot available, but it just becomes unpickable until the AI calms down, or you knock the AI down.
* why is stealing an AI's key, sometimes traps them inside locked door (prison in mission 2), and sometimes doesnt?
Different things could be happening. The games are not without bugs, too.
Mission 2
-I lured a zombie to fight a hammerite
A skill that comes in handy in certain missions. Good job!
-Is Thief the first FPS where NPCs have non-scripted combat vs each other and player? (all 3 of us are each others enemies)
Probably not, but somebody else would have to answer.
-What's the backstory with the lucky hand? (or will i find out about it later on?)
No backstory or further explanation. Apparently Garrett started out more superstitious and by TMA he's saying he doesn't believe in luck.
-If all the zombies and guards are killed, wer do the released prisoners run off to?
They seem to have lost their minds. It wouldn't surprise me if they all end up slain.
Mission 3 bonehard :o
-why doesnt the walking guy on fire change my lightgem wen he's close to me? gameplay or engine restriction? has mod community got around to 'faking' dynamic (lightgem) lighting in dark engine games?
Consider it good fortune, and a ghostly light, rather than a physical light. The Fire Shadow's a special creature.
-hiding that $20 vase behind those boulders in the trap room (u walk in, 3 small borders fall behind u blocking the door) was really uncalled for. i play on expert, not 'archeologist"
That's only a problem if you are trying to get all the loot. Some loot should be harder to find than others. You are exploring every nook and cranny of a giant network of crypts. This is the Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones-inspired mission. You are an archeologist of that sort. As Garrett once said:
gar1506: "'Archeologist' sounds so much more dignified than 'Thief.'
Mission 4
-is that annoying servant woman in the kitchen supposed to get spooked and call for help at any sound shes hears?
Don't make a sound. Good stealth practice. She's only annoying if you aren't sneaky.
-is the techno music supposed to keep on looping forever after entering casino through air shaft?
It's the casino jukebox (not really, but it's like that). Leave the Overlord's Fancy and you won't ever hear it again!

I'm having great trouble mantling, what's the trick?
Press and hold the jump button until you mantle. This is explained in the Training.
Is Thief the first FPS where NPCs have non-scripted combat vs each other and player? (all 3 of us are each others enemies)
There's a thing called 'team'. Player is from the one team, hammerites (and all the humans, and some others) are from the another team. Zombies and all the undead are from the yet another one. And NPCs from different teams generally fight each other.
If all the zombies and guards are killed, wer do the released prisoners run off to?
I think they just want to get out of there anyway. :) Without jokes, this is a scripted event - if you open the cell, the prisoner will run away to the certain location.

Try standing at different distances from the niche you want to reach, then move forward and jump at the same time while holding the jump key. If you are standing at the right distance you can also mantle by jumping only (without moving forward).
If you are standing too close you may not be able to mantle depending on how high up the niche is (with or without moving forward). Then you can try moving farther away and then do a running jump.
If the niche is not deep enough, you will not be able to mantle no matter how hard you try.
Some numbers:
Quote:
Minimum height for mantling = 7
Maximum height for mantling = 8
Maximum height for mantling from running jump = 10.5
Minimum wall thickness for mantling = 1.5
Minimum ledge depth for mantling = 2.5 (eg, on cliff face)
Running jump over gap to mantle at same height = 12

Face the vertical surface directly, and up against it. Make sure there's nothing protruding out above you, and if there is, move back a little. Make sure there's enough of a horizontal surface up there for you to stand on. At least one place requires you to get a running start, and there are a couple of instances in the series where running, jumping, and crouching in mid-air will get you through an opening. And of course, hold the key down until Garrett is at least nearly up all the way. If your game is running smoothly enough, you can time it with Garrett's breath, when he's exhaling. :)

My biggest problem is when I'm running and jumping, trying to mantle to an edge in midair, especially if my jump was slightly diagonal. I hold space, and hear garret's groan of mantle, but he just plunders to his death instead

I believe the first fps where npc would unscriptedly fight each other would be Doom (the AI in doom was considered advanced back then because of this ...).
Then , only if you skillfuly made an imp shoot another , then they would fight each other...
Garrett is not batman , don't try to mantle diagonally over a deadly pit...

Actually it does, you just have to eat them quicky in row. Example, if you have four apples, eat them all in a row to get health boost.

Food only heals you in Thief 1 if you have the bow upgrade.
