No offense to anyone who likes console games, but the thief series was always a PC game and think it should stay that way. If they want to release a port for it later on for consoles then that is fine. OR
If they can do a newer console game without having loading levels and other quirks such as no rope arrows and include swimming, then that is also fine! But I DON'T think those should be given up just to make it work on consoles.
I think it should be FIRST released as a PC game ONLY! Why? This will alleviate several problems that are still with the thief 3 fan mission makers...such as NO rope arrows...NO swimming in water (very stupid IMO) .....but the biggest gripe of all....... THE STUPID LOADING LEVELS!!!!!!!
It may not even be a problem on xbox 360 and sony playstation 3.
But I absolutely HATED those stupid loading things....it is what keeps me from running thief 3 again even today! It was a great game and I really loved the atmosphere, but those loading levels were just TOO MUCH!! I don't even know if the fan community was able to overcome not having any rope arrows or the swimming or taking the loading levels out.... as I just play thief 2 fan missions now. Much less trouble!!!
I cannot stress this enough, if there is going to be a thief 4.... PLEASE make it KEEP the best aspects of the older games while they impliment new technology.
But for heavens sake Eidos....... LEARN FROM THE PAST!! If you read these boards, then you will know what really ticked off thief fans the last time. The three things I mentioned are three of the biggest gripes they had!

I think the era of PC exclusive titles basically ended when id software claimed they were developing their new game (Rage) primarily for the 360.

There are still PC only games made today. Just not as many.
But my point was that I really don't care as long as they include the things that make thief the game it always was.
Thief 3 was a disaster when it came to putting in those loading screens and taking out swimming and rope arrows.
Frankly, they would have been better off if they had of made the PC version FIRST and included all that stuff. Then they could take out whatever they wanted in the console version.
But from what I read, it was because of the playstation 2's limits as a console were the reasons they had to take those things out. Which was very stupid in my opinion. It was not even the same game with those loading screens.
But maybe the newer consoles will not present such a problem.

For the record, I doubt the lack of swimming was a console problem :P.
But I tend to agree with you in principle - I think that console-built games tend to be 'worse' than dedicated PC games. And Thief's heritage is definitely as a PC game.
However, if modern consoles can handle the technical side of a 'proper' Thief game, large levels and so on, I don't see any reason why the game need be a worse quality on consoles or for consoles. Taking another example, Deus Ex - to put that game on consoles, many aspects of the gameplay simply had to be changed, since they relied heavily on mouse/keyboard. Thief doesn't have as many of those elements, so there's no real reason why you couldn't make the original Thief on a console (whereas the original DX would simply never have worked with a controller).
Now, speaking as a pragmatist, there's no way EM will overlook consoles. They're a business, after all, and consoles are too large a market to ignore. Shame. But I believe that for a Thief game, that doesn't have to be a bad thing.

I'm not entirely positive that those problems were because they made it simultaneously with the Xbox version.
I think it's that they did so as poorly as they could.

As hot as console sales are right now, I seriously doubt a big name title like Thi4f is going to be PC exclusive, thus cutting out entirely the profit margin from console sales that probably made the Developer/publisher begin a new title in the series in the first place.
Edit: Bakerman beat me to it, but yeah - its good for business to mine the console crowd for money.

I don't want it to be PC only. I want it to be an example of how a great game can work cross platform. If you port Thief 1 and 2 to PS3/X360 it would still be as good if you can deal with the controller. Personally I like mouse and keyboard but apart from that there is no reason whatsoever to have it exclusively on PC.

As long as it's built with the PC in mind, and not as an afterthought, I don't worry about it.

I think the jury will essentially be out on this until the success (or lackthereof) of Diablo III becomes clear. I have a suspicion that a lot of gamers will not only BUY (unheard of in the PC gaming industry) Diablo III out of sheer respect for such a risky endeavor on Blizzard's part, but also because of the raw quality of the game. I already know several torrent fanatics (won't even watch a movie in the theaters) who have pledged to do just that.
Perhaps Blizzard may teach other companies that if they invest fully in the PC/Mac platforms, the rewards can be equally or more lucrative than those of a multi-platform release. We shall see!

I could be wrong but I think the target audience is a big part of it (trying as hard as possible not to sound like an elitist:ebil:)
