TDS does have its ups and issues, but nobody can deny The Cradle.

The main problem with DS is its replayability. I actually quite enjoyed (bar the annoying console concessions- loading zones et al) it the first playthrough, but going back to it, once you know the story it just doesnt hold up gameplay wise.

Hey there everyone.
This is my first post ever here on the forums, so be nice to me please. ;)
Until now I have only played DS. A few days ago I got Thief Gold and Metal Age, so I am planning on playing them aswell(no spoilers please).
But DS is the game that made me interested in the series and it is, until yet, my favourite PC game ever. So for what it's worth, without this I maybe never would have been curious about the other games of the series.
What I really like about this game is the idea behind it. In most games, you go around, killing people that get in your way (ego shooters anyone? ^^)and in Thief it actually is quite the opposite. You want to be as stealthy as possible, fighting others isn't really an option and killing them (alomst) never needed or desired.
It really gives you the possibility to slip into the hooded robes of a master thief and become one yourself. Awesome! :D
I'm a little RPG nerd(Pen&Paper for example) and this just gave me one more possibility to experience being a thief and to put on that shoes und walk in the (silent)footsteps of a thief... better yet, creating those footsteps myself. It sometimes felt as if one of my Roleplay Characters came to life on my screen. :)
Playing in ego perspective more than once let my heart race when a guard for example came closer and closer, walked by me and I don't know how many times I thought "Ok, that's it, you're busted!" only to seconds later sigh in relief when they didn't see me.
When I played it the first time, I didn't know about the Cradle Mission nor it being so creepy and eerie, so when that began I got really spooked. I just didn't expect something like this. Even after the graveyard, the Abysmal Gale and the Catacombs I just really didn't think, a Mission like the Cradle would exist in a game that is "just" about a thief, thiefing his way through the city and relieving citizen of their possessions. It felt so intense, I hated it so much... and loved it for that. *lol*
I also didn't know about the Zombies(I make it a habbit not to spoiler me any game I'm about to play) so the Haunts in the Catacombs also made my heart beat faster(the noises they make are chilling as hell). I think it's the whole package, the ambience, the sounds and so on, that make the Cradle and the Haunts etc. so memorable.
Even now, years later after I first played this game, I'm still happy when I reach the Cradle Mission and then I'm just as happy when it's finally over. :D
On a side note: What I also really liked about DS was, that you didn't have to know the previous games or what happened in them or to Garrett, you got enough information of what was needed so I never sat there with a question mark above my head. The story was easy to follow, at least, for me.
And imho I think it is quite replayable(is that a word?). I enjoy it every time when I decide to play it again.
Ok, I think for now I have praised this game enough. I just wanted to throw in my two cents.

Welcome to the forum. The majority of Thief fans consider the first two missions games superior to TDS in terms of gameplay especially, so you're in for a treat. Also, you'll understand more of the things that went on in TDS having seen the whole story arc.

Enjoy T1-2 - and if they give you the urge to replay T3, then an updated version of the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143658) Thief 3 Gold beta should be out soon.
Also, just in case you haven't found it yet, (
http://www.thedarkmod.com) The Dark Mod is free and awesome...

Thank you very much. =) I am definitely curious and will keep you guys updated about my thoughts, when I've finished them. It will take a while though, I'm currently very busy.
While snooping around on the forums I've already read a little about the Dark Mod and was very interested in giving it a try, so I will let you know aswell what I think about it. :)

A bit harsh, but I can't disagree. Bafford's and Cragscleft were pretty good.

well I really loved thief 3( it´s actually my most favourite game, right before Thief2 and Kotor). I think it was maybe the first game to interest me in stealth, and when I finished it, I just wanted to play the two predecessors. It had a great atmosphere, a gripping story and some great levels (Cradle, seaside mansion, museum) I kinda disagree with most other fans, it could have been nice to have some rope arrows and little bigger missions would also have been great (but to say the missions felt more detailed as the previous games(especially Thief 1/Gold)) Another thing a bit bad is that this game may be a bit too easy, you can buy a lot of stuff and it is a bit too cheap. Too say the truth that actually didn´t bothered me because I´m one of the guys who collects all ammo and equipment (and never uses it) I think I nearly ghosted the cradle (expect on puppet that died because of a firearrow) You can´t argue about the length of DS. I took me about 30 hours to get through the missions and I didn´t spent much time in the city hub.
Also I think it´s a bit weird that so many say this game is glitchy. I only entcountered about 3-5 glitches throughout the game. One may be the most hilarious bug I have ever seen (a guard actually killed himself by constantly running into a barrel)
Yeah DS has some flaws, but also a lot of strengths. But I feel some fans are just overreacting a bit!

LOL! I think they know I meant the first two games. Good eye, though.

Haha, I had something similar, when a guard ran into a stack of crates and the top crate fell down and crushed him. :D
On a side note: One of the most hilarious havoc moments I had was actually unintended: When in the Pagan Mission to steal the Paw, there is a gear one floor above some pagans training/preparing for war.
Instead of just simply pushing it down I thought, if I use something to throw at it, it might have a little bit more power, so I grabbed a barrel that was on this kind of attic floor to the left and threw it at the gear. Somehow something, the gear or the barrel... or both?, exploded with a huge BOOM while falling down and killed all the pagans below. And of course others ran over there, one Pagan saying. "Oh no please, yous can't bees deads!" I was already in tears, and then this pagan runs into the gear and somehow even manages to kill himself (maybe his foot got squashed, lol, I don't know). I think I needed at least 5 minutes to stop laughing. :D
