I knew Thief was for me when...
... when I finished the final TDS objective, after having Gamall in search mode for five minutes and seeing her walk past a few inches from my hiding spot several times. I didn't know she's slow enough on the uptake to let me put the thing on the fountain, dance macarena and run away before she'd catch up. So much for raising the heartbeat, and I loved every bit of it. Figured I should check out the previous games, too, and so it all began...
Starting out with TDS isn't a sin, right...? ;(

Well I knew I was hooked on this blerdy game when I had to ring the help line number and get a hint how to proceed....lol,i was determined to proceed but didnt want to bump my phone bill up,so only called once...not that I cared much about the bill heehee.... and we didnt have "Taffers Anonymous" ttlg back then to ask hints or sneak a peek at a spoiler, haha
I was stuck in the Burrick tunnels and couldnt get out...I didnt know that rope arrows stuck in the ceiling of the tunnels and thats why I couldnt reach the hole above my head....before being gassed by the Burricks

No, especially if it leads you to the older titles.

I started with TMA which I bought I think like in 2004, and currently I don't have any thief disc (a strange thing happened in the CD drive on my old laptop.......).
Would go through cycles playing it, finishing the missions. Always found that last mission the longest though, not all of it enjoyable. Definitely a different type of game, still not into ghosting, though I do enjoy using my blackjack more now (or did, I should say).
