Well tales of the Frankenstorm are just in time for the real Haloween (not this weekend's parties, the real day).
Look like it's going to be epic. New York closed? Man, I wish I could be there. I love a good storm, lashing it all up, all the noise and drama and fury. In the UK the storms are damp squibs. In Africa we used to get some crazy rain, mudslides, roads turning into rivers, the whole shebang. There is nothing quite like being in the warm when the world is being blasted by the weather all around you.
Of course there is a limit to the coolness of it. A storm needs to be epic enough to be dramatic and remind us how helpless we are, but not epic enough to mess people's lives up.
So good luck to all the USAers who will be braving this. Stay safe and I hope it's just the right size to be fun.
Come on, this isn't a thunderstorm. Be respectful. People were fucking killed, lives completely disrupted, and several communities will be forever changed.

All my family and friends in the Northeast US seemed to make it through OK with only downed trees and power outages and stuff. Fortunately, the storm seemed to fizzle out incredibly fast after landfall so there wasn't the extreme rainfall and inland flooding seen last year with Irene. But still, massive damage to coastal areas, particularly NJ.
This severe weather shit is getting old. And assuming it's at least partly driven by warming, it will get worse. How long can we afford to keep rebuilding stick frame houses on grade in flood prone areas?

Now that was unexpected. Had to Google it to confirm.
