As a matter of interest, I just noticed qckbeam was here a moment ago replying to this thread but has since disappeared again which seems a shame.

Too bad he didn't at least tell us something one way or the other. Maybe he'll come back and respond. At least we can surmise that someone's PMs or emails got his attention.
Renault on 3/5/2008 at 18:03
Interesting...the plot thickens. Qckbeam, if you're out there reading this, do the right thing man. Make a quick post and let us know what happened. If there's anything you can be sure of, it's that the folks here on TTLG are the coolest on the net, and are pretty forgiving and understanding.
That said, since this is such a great community, and I really believe some kind of explanation is in order.

I'm sure no-one will care too hoots whatever the story is - they'd just like to know.

Well,
hello.
It's been four years? Five years? I received an email this morning from Brethren, your Internet Detective. He told me there were "a fair amount of people on the TTLG boards who would be willing to pay you for the journal." It took me a second to figure out what he was saying. I'd
forgotten about all of this, probably because
four years have passed. Still, that message would have been enough to get me back here. The second part though, "We've posted your contact info," that creeped me out a little. Who is "We?" and why are they posting my contact info? So I came back right away. Coming here, seeing all this speculation as to my motives along with an extensive (and inaccurate) chronicle of my online activities...well, that was more than a
bit creepy.
The journal is tucked away. I didn't trade it for a wheelbarrow full of cash, I didn't sell it on eBay. It's safe, stored along with the other things I treasure. And I
won't sell it; I like it. I'm a Thief fan too, though I might be a disloyal, treacherous one. I feel bad about the whole affair, but reading some of what's been written here pisses me off.

As it stands, plain and simple, Qckbeam is a liar. It doesn't mean he's going to hell or anything like that, it just means that he's a dishonest person.
Quote:
He won the contest and it was his responsibility to get a PDF into the hands of the community. There are consequences to action and inaction...if he comes back, he'll have to suck it up. If he didn't have time to scan the journal, he should have donated the journal back to the mods of TTLG. It takes no time to pop it into an envelope and ship it to someone in the mail.
I'll apologize for not making good on my promise. I was fifteen or sixteen years old, I was going through a tough period at home. Scanning the journal took up a lot of time; I'd already posted the most interesting parts here. The rest was hard to read and, while there are some neat tidbits remaining, it's mostly unrelated to Thief. Some of the stuff also seemed really personal (401k information, phone numbers, addresses, etc.), and I didn't want to inadvertently contribute to the theft of Emil's identity or something.
It was a lot of work. I pushed it off, I got busy, I pushed it off again. Eventually I forgot about the whole thing. I thought about returning with a post, or the scans, but so much time had gone by, and I'd already posted the juicy bits. So I never came back and I never thought much of it. The End.
I don't appreciate the guilt trip, and I
do not appreciate this e-stalking bullshit. Trying to find my e-mail address is one thing; posting a comprehensive overview of my online history and contact information...that's quite another. A few of you seem to think this journal is property of the Thief fan community;
it's not. I don't
owe you anything, and I'm not a dishonest bastard because I
forgot about a promise I made
on the Internet. Part of me is tempted to scan a bunch of gay porn, wrap it up in a pdf labeled "Thief Journal," and post. Then I could vanish into the mists, chuckling and twirling my villain's moustache.
Anyway...as for the scans -- I'll see about posting them if a mod removes all of my personal information. Some of you have been really cool about this; thanks for that. I'd be a jerk to hold out on you. I have a very busy week, but it's followed by three months of calm. I might not post
everything (like the personal information I mentioned), but I'll scan as much as I can.
To the creepy e-stalkers: four years? Really? Thief is great and all, but it might be time for a new hobby.
Digital Nightfall on 3/5/2008 at 19:06
I found one post listing information about you, and removed it. Maybe you can point out anything I missed.
Renault on 3/5/2008 at 19:08
Guess I'm a little shocked at the moment, heh... Just a few things I wanted to mention real quick after reading Qckbeam's post:
First, thanks for the reply. You didn't have to, but you did. That says a lot.
There are a lot of rabid fans here, I'm one of them. Maybe I overemphasized the importance of the journal and got carried away. I apologize if you were offended by me posting some of your online info, but I didn't think it was that bad. We're not talking social security number, home address, wife's name, or anything like that. It was just some urls of message boards you had posted on, is that so bad? This is all information anyone can get on google at any time - it's not like I hired a PI to track you down. Well, in any case, it really doesn't matter what I think, so after this post, I'll go back and delete it all out of respect for your privacy.
Anyway, what's done is done. I hope you can find the time to finish the scans, and get the journal out to everyone. I still believe you had a obligation to do so, for no other reason than that you said you would do it. You may hate/dislike me, and be pissed at what I did, but there are many other fans here on TTLG besides me who are interested in seeing that journal.

I only found this thread recently but did find the existence of a journal quite fascinating - and you're not wrong - helluva difficult to read.
I'm finding the info just released on T2X just as fascinating. The ideas and thoughts behind a concept - very unusual to have the opportunity to read about it. I expect I'm a rabid Thief fan probably for the simple reason I've never found another game that I enjoy quite so much. It suits my ability.
So if you've not been back for so long you may not be aware of all the fabulous fms there are available these days. Unbelievable quality - I'm sure you'd really enjoy them. And I think it's undoubtedly because of the fms that our interest is ongoing. And I find that the more games I don't get on with, the greater my enjoyment and interest is in Thief.
I do hope you'll accept the apologies for misunderstanding your absence and indulge us poor sods - some of us are far too old to get new hobbies. :D

Heart-warming reunion, isn't it.
Be sure to watch next season, when brethren wins an original concept art of Garrett's left little toe - and on the spot gets lost after a horrid plane crash over the atlantic ocean, is accidentally saved by ghost-pirates - only to be enslaved and sold to a strange tribe of apemen on a vulcanic island yet undiscovered by civilisation and populated by giant mosquitos. See him hide his treasure from detection, watch his adventurous escape on a self-built cooking pot and experience Goldmoon Dawn's altruistic endeavors to at least get the pic back to safety...
Coming soon.

Wow, seeing what he posted has convinced me to read the entire damn thread... Here i go!
Wow, damn, Brethren was a dick. Go jtr + xxcoy! :cheeky:
Qck, you take your time dude, I for one know how life can fuck you over. I may not have been gone as long as you have (4 months), and may not have had such an "important piece of LGS history" in my hands, but it was still a bitch.
As for those fucks who said you had/have a "responsibility to release this to the community," let the filthy mutts bark. Or silence them with a quick slash to the throat. I agree with the others who said this before me. You don't have a responsibility to do shit, and these ungrateful little bastards are just pissy little bitches who didn't get their candy on time.
don't make me go Gunnery Sgt. Hartman on your asses, I will
