Very interesting. Plenty of hidden gems (p43: first mention of a "persistent economy"; p50 "pirate ship" :)). A valuable insight into a valuable computer game franchise. Two thumbs up :thumb: :thumb:

Reading this journal is like trying to understand Shakespeare, especially the first 17 pages. qckbeam would be a hero if he would transcribe the text in times new roman.
I thought my writing was horrific until I saw this :)
For us, this writing/drawing is a work of art(some people, including me, consider Picasso's works ugly but they are works of art nonetheless) !
This gives me an insight to the best game developement team's inner workings.
Praise the "Builder" or should I say "qckbeam after he transcribes it for us".
How many pages does the journal have ?
This journal deserves to be scanned with Epson Perfection 4870 PHOTO at high resolution somewhere in the future, to be featured on Thief-TheCircle.

I think what emerges is just how similar Thief Deadly Shadows is to what they had planned....it's all mentioned, 3rd person, consoles, the lot. I don't think Ion Storm can be held half as accountable as some would make out for these design decisions.
Also, just read some observations about NOLF...funny.

Was the Thief 3 stuff written at a time when LG was still alive, though? I assumed that Emil dug the notebook out again whilst working on Thief 3 at Ion Storm?
Dark Sky

The Journal date back to feb 2000 before the bad thing happened. There are detes of dev meetings written by Emil.

As far as I know, the general concept of all three games was made even before The Dark Project was released. It was meant to be a trilogy from the very beginning.

I don't mean to resurrect an old thread (heh, there's actually a red bar with a "Thread Necromancy Warning" on it up top!), but I'm a bit behind the times and just recently got my hands on the PDF. I admit, I was quite skeptical of it's authenticity, mostly from the poor handwriting; for some reason I thought it would be in some meticulously spidery script with jaw-dropping sketches on every other page of the mysterious and commonplace. So much for the romantic dreams :sly:. Anyway, I've noticed quite a few seem to have problems reading it. As I come from a similarly sloppy handwriting background, I could very well try to transcribe over the original PDF (partly to preserve the feeling of the original) and/or possibly come up with an entirely text-format document for those with excessively slow connections. I'll have to figure out how to make a torrent for it, possibly, as well as a web tracker if it gets done. Or perhaps someone has already finished such a project in another thread?
EDIT: Actually, should just be able to export the comments from Acrobat and then provide for download and easy importing :D
EDIT: Damn, 35 pages done so far! Calling it a night!
