I love that the thread at least partially about addressing crazy thread derailments has..become derailed.

Personally I've been lurking here on TTLG for probably a good 10 years (fuck me, the time goes so fast), and it's still the only forum to actually make me ragequit.
Mind you, that was ragequit, ponder for a while, feel deeply embarrassed, admit to myself that getting that fucking annoyed about a forum is both stupid and stupid and also stupid, man up, and then come back only to realise I'd forgotten my password and then reregister.
But still: psyche development and self-awareness in forum form, dude!

Which brings me loosely to: seriously, I really don't think it's changed all that much over the years. Ok, maybe I could agree that the general douchebag quotient has increased, but then the general douchebag quotient of the entire intarwebs has increased too, and probably by a greater percentage. TTLG is still running below inflation, so to speak. Sure, there is still probably a lot of behind the scenes moderatatatating going on, but isn't there always?

I still come here because the level of intelligent discussion can be incredibly high, but still matched with enough pointless sniping to make it not constant WALL O TEXT, and also provide a few laughs. Some of the older posters have posting personalities so close to concrete archetypes that it's almost like a sitcom at times (only not shit). I would argue that rather than griping at the fact some threads end up in pointless back and forth posts about airplanes and rectal insertion of mountain dew bottles, you should be celebrating that so few end up that way. It's one of the few places on the internet where one can argue a point and know that some of the responses will actually be sensible, well thought out (but fucken wrong :mad:) counterarguments. Intelligent counterarguments. I'd be lying if I said I'd ever actually had my mind changed by any of those counterarguments, but it's still a massively more thought-provoking experience to actually have an intelligent counterargument than it is to just have "LOL FAG" or similar. Ok you get that sort of thing too, but hell, even the dismissive lollerposting is usually more intelligent than your general interweb dross.

Plus I occasionally get to talk biochemistry and not feel like an utter spod.

So, TL: DR version: shit be fine, stop worrying.

I'd like to think some kind of reputation system might work, but the feeling I get from reading through is that most of you are complaining about the same things as a couple of years ago. For me at least, it seems there has been a disappearance of too many key personalities. I think there used to be more people to outweigh the inanity, and there isn't much to leap out on the first page of Community Chat.

Still, I've go no idea why I decided to log in tonight. Perhaps I'm just looking for some familiar names.
