I propose this idea... - by Gingerbread Man

I think people would benefit from spending a little time evaluating whether or not anyone else actually cares...

How about limiting a poster's post rate if they have been bad but not bad enough for outright ban? You could give them a 2 or 3 post limit per day for a week, hopefully encouraging them to make amends or apologize profusely and concisely! I imagine you would probably have to do this manually though.

I don't know, in a way I wouldn't mind seeing the option to "thumbs-down" posts that I feel are stupid / useless / offensive. For when you wouldn't quite feel right reporting the post, but want to say "I disapprove of this". The idea being that heavily downvoted threads would be hidden by default - standard enough stuff.
The problem with being able to downvote threads is that, for a busy thread, ten people could hate a specific posts and downvote it, making it hidden despite the fact that 200 people liked it, which of course brings in the need for also being able to upvote a post to counteract this effect.
But once you start letting people vote on posts like that, you've have people angling to get their posts upvoted, people complaining about their posts being downvoted, and lots of other Drama with a capital 'D'.
Of course, I also have to admit that I'm more thinking of the rubbish we see over in Gen Gaming, not specifically CommChat, but I'd think the same principles apply.

I'm still wondering if more immediate, short-term gags wouldn't help the level of discourse. Start getting too handbags-at-dawn and bam, muted for half a day.
This on top of the Sluggs train, of course, which I'm still a proponent of. I don't like the idea of segregating entire threads or subforums, just get rid of the biggest losers and see what happens.

I don't see why the good old-fashioned banning of assholes wouldn't work. Just keep a bit stricter and more consistent line against idiotic shit.
What I've been wondering all through my 10 or so years in Commchat is how certain trolls get away with almost anything. I totally get the "But he's OUR own crazy person", but as a community it doesn't send a very clear message to new members - let alone potential new trolls - when certain people are allowed to spout rude, insulting shit randomly at anyone and everyone, as long as they 1) have been around long enough, and 2) sometimes scream something funny.
Here, here!! Just ban the assholes for a week. Impartial attitudes could go a long way around here, favoritism is high on the hog here.

Note: I voted for the "clubhouse" option, but was confused - consider my vote for the first.
Basically, I'm really happy you're making this, because I've been toying with the idea of leaving TTLG altogether, or at least finding a second "main" forum, for a while now. I love the place and don't want to have to re-learn the personalities of some new monstrosity, but it's really degraded. My initial concern was that we were slowly but surely bleeding membership, and that this place would eventually turn into a legit ghost town; but there is now of much less concern than the asshattery that kicked off this thread. I don't mind a small, tight-knit community. I just would prefer that they balance the insult-matches with something more engaging.
Come on, many forums nowadays are downsizing because of forum members leaving to other interests and life, it always happens sooner or later, due to the topics of the forums getting obsolete or losing interest in the theme of the forum.
Some other forums have grown up small and now they're even smaller, I guess people don't want to really chat at all.
If being weird is a problem then I will contribute to the forum by making it even more slow by constraining myself and my personality down to a lobotomy level (oh great joy, imagine the fun of being a flat liner personality when you're actually all sparky and stuff like that).

If being weird is a problem
Being weird isn't a problem. Being an asshole is.
I've never contributed that much to Commchat, or to the forums in general as much as some others. The biggest reason is because , and this applies especially lately, most threads devolve into "Whose e-dick is bigger" arguments. The TTLG forums aren't about carrying on the legacy of Looking Glass Studios anymore (maybe they never were). They're about treating anyone whose opinion is different than yours like a piece of shit and calling anyone who disagrees an idiot.
Some people around here are rampant assholes to everyone else and they're allowed to get away with it. Maybe some of them don't realize that being a total dick isn't the appropriate response to every situation, or maybe they just don't care.
It's hard to give a damn about the future of a forum where elitist pricks are allowed to run rampant while anyone who actually wants to discuss gaming in some form of civility is treated like a second class citizen.

What.
It's easy to throw general statements like that, but this thread isn't about about TTLG as a whole. Actually, every subforum except "Community Chat" and "General Gaming" is well-mannered, well-moderated and populated with a bunch of interesting people (EDIT: except theBlackman, but he's senile).
Who are those elitist pricks? When were you unable to discuss gaming? Give examples. The only example of vitriol I saw in your recent interactions was that Lucky 38 thing and then you deserved it by bringing nothing much to a GenGaming thread than "Does anyone here honestly care about this game?".
TTLG is:
* Specialised forums that are mostly doing well and are totally about carrying on the legacy of LGS,
* A GenGaming forum filled with many normal people and just a handful 'colorful' characters, sometimes funny, sometimes pathetic, yet with absolutely no ill intention,
* CommChat™
So, who exactly is the problem again? We want names.
