And I haven't even played the whole thing yet. I don't even like strategy! As a rule anyway.
Something about the simultaneous turnbased thing is strangely addictive. You never quite can predict exactly what's going to happen and things can go awry mid turn and the plan has to change drastically.
Plus it's awfully weird (I befriended a time travelling crocodile once). People tell me it's pretty much the same as Strange Adventures in Infinite Space. But that had supposedly a 20min per adventure average. The fights in this can last a lot longer by themselves. You also feel like you have a chance in every fight if you're just clever enough. That's pretty cool.
Anyone got the whole thing? How does it hold up later on? Does the AI get predictable or do large fleets mess things up?

I have the full game on Steam, but just haven't had a chance to play it properly yet. I like its humour and visual style a lot. I'll have to explore it a bit more than I did the demo at some point.

Is the gameplay depth on par with or surpass that of Homeworld?
catbarf on 7/8/2010 at 15:42
Hell no. I want to like it but after playing for half an hour I'm convinced I've seen everything (literally, everything) the game has to offer.

It shouldn't be much like Homeworld, for Homeworld's sake I'd think. That's more of a full scale RTS.
Flotilla is a little indie skirmish game. Strange Adventures in Infinte Space is the thing its most likened to (and one other which I forget)

I spent a good week addicted to that when it came out. Catbarf is right in that there's not a lot of depth or content, but then, it's not really intended to be a full game, more like a little breather between tasks (or bigger games!). I actually found it a great way to chill out - I'd turn off the in-game music and put my own and and just go for the gold. That said, while I understand it's working on the SAiIF model, I do wish it didn't suddenly cut you off. There are times when I get a big fleet together and I really wanna go as far as I can.
Basically, it's not gonna change your life, but I think it's worth $10, particularly relative to a $60 game. Though we're all so Steam-bargain-spoiled that $10 can seem like a lot.
p.s. If you want to get an online duel going when I back to my desktop in September, count me in!
p.p.s. For those who missed it, this is from the same guy who did Gravity Bone - so he's got some pretty diverse game design skills. I still think GB was one of the best games of 2009.

I got it for $2.50 during the summer sale and can pretty much echo the comments here. My biggest gripe is probably the way it suddenly ends right as things start getting good. It seems like most of my time is spent using the two starting destroyers and by the time I get more ships, my lifespan is up. I think I've about had my fill.
Now if only Steam would release Homeworld, I'd be a happy man.

I bought it at full price on launch, and, while I don't feel I've wasted my money, I still feel like I'm waiting for the game to be finished. I hope Blendo gets back to it someday.

A couple of times I've had five ships by the end of the demo. How many planets are there in the full thing?
I can see things running out without much happening though. It is that sort of 'in-between games' game where you have a bit of a fun blast (if you like that sort of thing). It was the advertised length of Strange Adventures.. that turned me off looking at that more closely. Too ephemeral (plus it's only 2d, and despite liking Star Control 2 well enough back in the day, I like my space with space). The 3d aspect of this really got my attention and its working so far. I am starting to feel like my assortment of tactics can handle the AI fairly well in most situations, so unless that changes up in the full thing it could be a problem. Still, it's fun to actually play and interact with most of the time, even though I feel like I should be able to win, which is cool. But a bit of desperate struggle now and then never hurts.
There was talk of expansions in the future, although I'm not sure if that was said officially anywhere or just idle gossip on RPS.

How can there possibly be a demo? What does the demo lack?
