The old briefings are awesome. I 'watched' The Dark Project (all briefings and cutscenes) yesterday on Youtube. Good stuff.

I watched all the TDP and TMA briefings on my ATI Player yesterday. I needed a refresher for a little scribbling I am doing.
Even the sketches with the voice-over by Russell are superior to the Ho-Hum crap from TDS.

Definitely perfect, the old school briefings really do an incredible job of setting the stage for the missions. :D

Another vote for the old school briefings and disparaging of the TDS 3-D Cutscenes. Save yourselves a crap load of work and just do it the way LGS originally did it.

Absolutely, definitely needs to be a top priority. I felt shortchanged by their omission in Deadly Shadows. And I can't understand why Ion Storm didn't do them. They couldn't have been that hard to create. They're just a bunch of drawings put together over Garrett's narration. They had the narration, but not the artwork. Hopefully EM is already looking for a qualified illustrator.

One of the best things about the original briefings (apart from the amazing artwork that further immersed you in the Thief universe) was getting to hear Garrett's description of what happened and is happening. I found myself really looking forward to that at the end of each mission. It was a chance to hear Garrett speak at length and it really pulled you in and made you identify with him much more. It was the in the briefings, I think, that I really fell in love with Garrett's character. And of course, kudo's to Stephen for this. The first time I saw a briefing in TDP I thought "How cool is this?!"

I think it could use a bit of brushing up to be honest.
Just look at Call of Duty 4, whose system is kind of a successor to the Thief 1 and 2 briefings. Sure, the images shouldn't zip around the screen like they do in CoD4 since the idea isn't to make it seem very technology-driven like it is in CoD4, but I think they could do with being a bit more "busy". Does it only have to be stills that are shown? How about intersplicing some animations, or Thief cutscene-style shadow characters interacting, or three-dimensional objects when referring to them?
Don't get me wrong, I think the ol' having the main character voice-over scenes explaining the setup is a great idea and it should definitely return should they go with a mission-by-mission system.

The old-school cut-scenes were brilliant. It turned Thief into a story setting, like a collection of maps and still images and memories of Garrett portrayed directly to the player with subtle clues of what to do.

revival of the series, not a
renewal.
Classic LGS-style briefings FTW!!! :D:D

Revival!!!??? Thief never died! :p
As to the point you were making, however, I completely agree. Returning back to the source for the minor details is very important; classic briefings would be one step into a very, very good direction.
