The old DP and MA briefings is a MUST.
They really got you ready for the mission it's describing. So immersive.
AND
The cutscene style from DP and MA also. You know, silhouettes with a few moments of focused character CGI. Those cutscenes were so stylish and artistic. Nothing else like them.
I hated the 3D cutscenes in DS.
HOWEVER
The Pagan and Hammerite cutscenes in DS were very good, they had the old artistic feel from DP and MA about them. Especially the Pagan one (where the Pagan Shaman squeezes something bloody, and makes the bloodroots grow).

I'm all for their return, since they were atmospheric and nice... :)
But : They should be inserted in the game in a way, that will feel reasonable and logical - they could work fine in the "open city and separate missions" model as well as in the old "missions only" model, but they need to be implemented logically and with good taste.

I can't get enough of those briefings. I don't know how they possibly made so good in TDP and TMA. Everytime I watch them I have the feeling something is watching me...

You are so right, PotatoGuy! The briefings always have a creepy aura for me as well. They make the hairs on the back of my neck go crazy like something is hiding in that dark corner watching me. It doesn't help that my crazy hubby sneaks up & scares the crap out of me, either! Hmmm...I guess there IS something creepy watching me. :laff: I've learned to listen on my side of the screen as well. :cheeky:

I'm open to see how EM decide to approach briefings, but even so I have to admit the original ones were extremely well done. I don't know the details of how they were first developed; it was probably a mixture of technical compromise and artistic choice. Fully-rendered 3D sequences probably weren't possible with the technology at the time, plus they would have detracted from the cruder visuals of the game engine. A hand-drawn/painted look fitted the atmosphere of the game perfectly and also meant background details (e.g. the fall of the Lost City, or the history of the Haunted Cathedral) could be explained quickly by a single image accompanied by an appropriate sound effect.

I don't want the old briefings. They give you visual clues so you know what to expect.

No serious thief would go on a mission risking his life without any background informations and careful planning. Would you?
