If you've still got the RX-8, you probably don't want 22mpg flashing in your face all day anyway :)
Hey! I do 25-30mpg because I drive sensibly (mostly)!
I'd get a Mazda 3 over the Ford Focus too. But then I just like Jap cars :p

I'd learn how to drive and buy a used Toyota, or Honda. Save 10 to 15.

To each their own; at least you're not going with a Honda or Kia.
Bite your tongue! I LOVE my little Kia! It not only handles great (I also happen to think it looks sassy too), but last month I drove over 180 miles on
less than a half tank of gas.
'Nuff said.
:p

Kias are fine.
... if you like sassy. :)
Edit: ... which is to say the username lizardfuel55 doesn't strike me as having that personality. But you never know.

The Focus would be my choice in that price range as well, but definitely get the 5 door. A year from now, you won't remember that it cost $800 more than the sedan but you'll appreciate the hatch every time you have to carry something larger than a suitcase. The Mazda3 5 door is better, but only if you intend to get the manual transmission. Personally, I prefer a manual in a small car. But if you're going to get an automatic transmission, the dual clutch 6-speed auto in the Focus is the way to go. The Mazda 3 will also cost you more for similar options, probably $2-3k more after negotiating.
The Civic is a boring drive compared to these two, a bit too boring for me. And the Corolla and Cruze are just hopeless. I've rented both recently and hated them. To my surprise, one recent rental I liked was the Hyundai i30, which I think is called the Elantra Touring in the US. I'd give that a look as well.

I like your first car except where it says TURN ME LOOSE it should say TURN ME OVER IF YOU CAN READ THIS only upside down.

My nickname used to be "Loverboy", and I love that song "Turn me Loose". It is an inside joke of sorts.

'll sell you my drag car for that much...My brother has a 73 vega. Has ran at Ohio Valley and Fredricksburg strips. It was hitting mid 7's 1/8th mile. i made up an ebay screen.. "sixsecondvega" when he wanted to get a few things. Took a minute but has hit consistent high 6's. His best run was 6.86, perfect light. Ran a flat 7 once with the front wheels still in the air past the 60 foot beam.
