"Artificial difficulty" comes from bugs, camera issues, random deaths, and withheld information. It doesn't mean, "design decisions I didn't like."
They can be both. The game is definitely more difficult without power shot and slide. I can't tell you how much I wished for power shot especially. It'd make my life dealing with the elephants in Concrete Man's stage
so much easier.

Right. Because if there's one thing the series is known for, it's maintaining continuity of Mega Man's abilities from game to game. Jesus.
Well, considering that slide and powershot have been in every game SINCE 3 AND 4 RESPECTIVELY,
well yeah. I just played through the entire series, dude, and there isn't a lot that changes throughout except Rush's abilities. Powershot and slide remain pretty much the same through the entire series. Taking them out for Megaman 9 was a poor design decision meant to appeal to retrofags who scream FUCK YES like they're at a rock concert every time the title and theme show up in the Megaman 2 intro.

They may have left it out specifically because the buster tends to take over the entire game. You tend to use your boss weapons much more heavily in MM1-3 then you do in the other, simply because the buster isn't there as a catch all do all.
It's not innately bad, but they really do need to take into account that you'll be using the boss weapons to get through stages when they design them, particularly in attack patterns and energy usage. MM1 both the elec and fire weapons we functional and inexpensive enough to get you through stages. MM2 had the metal blade, which pretty much was the default standby weapon. MM3 wasn't as nice, but the shadow and needle weapons could get you by.
I could probably live without the buster, but that's largely because I didn't care much for MM4+, so I didn't get as attached to it as others.

You're way off. Several of the later games' bosses- starting as early as 5- are very difficult to defeat unless you use their weakness weapon to cancel out their attacks.
And no, they left it out specifically to appeal to retrofags. Inafune even said Megaman 9 was meant to appeal to fans who said Megaman 2 was their favourite.
Don't get me wrong, I love Megaman 9 to bits in spite of certain apoplexy-inducing parts, but taking out abilities Megaman has had since early on was a stupid fan concession that damaged the game.

The bosses have always tended to require other boss weapons to go down without lots of trouble. I was actually referring to the stages.
At any rate, if it's as hard as you say - and I've only played the one level in the demo, and it's was pretty rough - it seems odd that it's targeting MM2 fans, since that was one of the easiest games in the entire series. I think I'd only count MMX1 as being easier the MM2.

That I'll give you, but to be fair I rarely used the boss weapons in MM1/2 stages either.
Phatose on 28/8/2009 at 22:57
Really? In 1 I could probably get by most of the time, but in 2 I had the Blade on pretty much all the time - was just too effective not to use, especially since it was energy efficient to boot.

Megaman 2 is pretty fucking easy for the most part and certainly doable with just your regular weapon. I mostly use the metal blade on certain bosses like Bubble Man and on occasion those irritating floating robots that chase after you in Crash Man's stage.
Of course, for giggles I also use the Blade on Metal Man himself during the endgame rematch. Always funny.
Flash Man's weapon is vital for Quick Man's stage though. Fuck lasers.
Incidentally, I don't think it's very well known that Heat Man's weapon can be charged and it ruins Quick Man's shit in two hits.

I knew about the charge for the heat wave - always fun on woodman, since that's another 2 shotter and you basically have to sit there waiting anyway. Never tried it on quickman - can't remember if he was another one I just pulled out the blade on.
