Id Software boss says that PC hardware biz thinks piracy brings a "hidden benefit" - by EvaUnit02

Maybe it is the fact that you'll probably need a PC to burn the illegal copy for the console anyway (or can it be directly downloaded on the console?).
Thanks for the info about copyright levy. I didn't know how it's named in english. It seems all this is because of (

I'm stupified that companies seem not to be able to turn in a fair profit selling to the PC market. Perhaps it's just me but I haven't had a piece of pirated software on my PC since I don't know when - certainly the best bit of 10 years (I had a pirate copy of one of them big 3D programmes when I was at Uni, whenever that was; I think I wanted to make some game maps & mod stuff or something and everyone was using ripped off copies of photoshop and 3DS Max - oh wait). I've got cash, like gaming (in theory); I'm just waiting for someone to make a game that is a) marketed to some extent so I get to know about it, b) will work on my 1 year old PC and c) isn't mindless tosh.
In the mean time there's thief Fan Missions...

We have a blank media 'in lieu of royalties' levy on stuff too, or we did. It's a small amount per disk.
I reckon it's a good idea. There should be similar on bandwidth traffic too. Beats the shit out of DRM.

Indeed, I would most certainly pay more to be rid of DRM; however, the levy is controlled by the government while DRM is controlled by the market.
