You could aim with the mouse already in Wolfenstein 3D y'know. I guess Quake 2 was the first one that was
designed to be played with kb+mouse though. I know a lot of people still used just keyboard to play Quake.
haha this reminds of when I first started playing quakeworld, I used keyboard at that stage and I was getting totally caned all the time, just though I was pretty bad, then one time some guy messages me saying "are you using keyboard?" and I was all like well durr Im on a pc, then he told me about mouselook which I had no idea existed up until that point.
It was a lot easier.

I haven't played any id game for more than 30min - I don't like their atmosphere and they all seem too simplistic and pointless to me. Classic shooters need something more than running and gunning for me, like Unreal had incredible graphics and game world for it's time, or Shadow Warrior had great humor.

Another fan of Return to Castle Wolfenstein here, loved the game's atmosphere, although the bullet-sponges on harder difficulty were a let-down (this game introduced me to bullet-sponged AI, since it was one of the first FPS games I'd played!).
Wolfenstein (2009) is probably worth picking up, I got it recently for £8 here in the UK, thought it was OK and worth playing, but not as good as RtCW. There's only 1 of the "classic" RtCW cinematics in the Wolfenstein, for instance.

Yeah, Wolfenstein was excellent. I need to replay that. And RtCW was insanely gorgeous and fun.

Interesting how Looking Glass went fully 3D (System Shock) nearly 2 years before id Software did (Quake). Not long after, Sean Barrett was consulting with John Carmack for help when creating the Dark Engine renderer. Obviously LGS was more interested in "the game" itself while id focused on "the tech." I suppose that speaks volumes about the state of gaming in in the past decade or so since LGS is long gone and id is still thriving and bigger than ever.
That said, even though I love LGS games, I've also always been sort of an id fanboy. Rage absolutely looks worth picking up.
??? System Shock was a 3d world with 2d sprites. Quake was the original all 3d game.

systemshock/uw were rasterized polygonal, games before it had mostly just been raycasting. Quake did bring it further though with fully lightmapped 3d environments and 3d characters.
