If you like hearing about id software, and you like hearing John Carmac
k speak, then you'll enjoy (
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/rage/video/6328910/id-software-20th-anniversary-video-feature) this video
Summary about video:
John Carmack (and others) discuss licensing id's technology, the future of games with id, the birth of multiplayer, and the start of First Person Shooters.
I always thought it was 'Carmack', but in the video it shows his last name as 'Carmac.'

that's because it is Carmack, you seriously expected Gamespot to get something right?

Fun video to watch - gotta love Carmack, seems like making money and being famous & successful was always completely secondary to just coming up with new tech for his games. A real rarity in the industry it would seem.
That said, WTF is up with Gamespot? OK, I can see an typo when the thing was originally posted, but it's almost two days later, its' a headline story on their front page, and they still have one of the biggest legends in video gaming history's name spelled wrong! Not just in the video, but in the main headline as well. What a bunch of fucking doorknobs.

They got all the other letters in his name right didn't they? They even remembered to capitalize the first one!

I dunno what it is about being a software genius that absolutely requires you having to talk through your nose. They all do it. Bill Gates, John Carmack, Steve Jobs.
I guess they all have so much money, they don't care if they sound like your squeaky Uncle Marty.

I wouldn't call Jobs a software genius. Or even a genius, come to think of it.

I'm with you there, but whatever he did when he went back to Apple to convince hordes of drooling morons to flock to buy their retarded computers was patently clever (see what I did there). This doesn't negate the fact that I want him to drop dead in the middle of one of those fucking keynotes.
Woz was the "software genius," whatever that even means

He's got his skills. If you think of Carmack as the genius engineer, Gates as the businessman, then Jobs (or Jonathan Ive, but I only think he's involved with hardware) is the Feng Shui obsessed interior design hipster.
The guy definitely has a knack for taking something that used to be considered a hobby for the technically inclined, and making it so easy to use that even Grandma can slap together a bunch of videoclips in Final Cut and post it on the internet.
And he talks through his nose.
