I thought the reason people thought it was going to be all voxels, and not a hybrid approach, was because Carmack kept comparing it to with what they did (are doing) with id5, where all the textures, even for objects and AI, were covered by megatexturing. Then he says id6 will apply the same thinking to geometry, which makes it sound like a general approach to cover all geometry with unique detailing ubiquitously, then baking all that into a massive data file like a megatexture. And if you think about the issues they had with megatextures; Doom3 allows megatexturing but a single one can be a few gigabytes because there's no compression built-in, and all the work after that (into Enemy Territory and now Rage) was just to compress megatextures to something manageable. Then the analogy sounds like the issue with voxels is again to figure out a way to compress and deal with all that data ... at least to a layman's ears.
But anyway, it was just an analogy and I trust they know what they're doing and will develop something workable. So I'll be interested to see what they come up with.

If Carmack thinks Voxels are the future, Voxels are the future. In Carmack I trust.

We, we trust.
