But remixes still use parts and pieces of others work to make new ones, sometimes in ways the original creators didn't imagine. Of course, it would be better not to outright state your remix as an "improvement", but if someone can creatively re imagine a work to make it fresh while still being enjoyable, I don't see why they shouldn't.
@Lady Rowena: I think the idea here is less to make something "better" and more to make a fresh work out of the original. Aren't you reusing parts and pieces of the original missions for your next fan mission too? What's wrong with doing that?

We kind of agree on the subject, but only to some extent. Remix
is something different, a new take on an original idea or using original parts in a different way.
This is where we disagree:

That doesn't make any sense, it's not what remix is.

Whatever, let's just say they want to make their own versions of cyberpunk Hell's Kitchen in New York, cyberpunk Paris and other locations. Honestly, wouldn't you like it if these places felt more like actual places? Especially Paris, which was oddly very monotone and blocky. To me, that was always their intention, regardless of whatever they write about "improving" on the locations.
To give an idea of what I'm taking about, here's a news piece that shows the kind of remixing they're doing:

As you may remember, the original version wasn't anything like the real parisian metro station. Well, we have made a difference here. We have used pictures from a real parisian metro station as reference so if you happen to live in Paris by any chanche, you may recognize some things.
Does that sound reasonable, or does it somehow indicate that they're trying to be "better" or something?

Yes, and my only hope is that the purists will not turn up their nose. :)
The difference is: I'm not trying to fix, enhance, or rewrite part of the original games. I'm not touching them, if not for the textures and some architecture. I'm just imagining events that occur some time after the OMs.

Well, in the same way there are some people who would like to see Deus Ex's levels in a fresh light (going by the comments on the mod's page). I know that some people are upset about these odd remarks about "improving" the levels, but I always saw it as making them more of lived in spaces that would be enjoyable to explore. To me, that was a lot of the appeal of Deus Ex.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to raise this, but one thing that would improve the game for me (any flavour of Thief) is an in-game indication of how well the player is doing at finding secrets, a counter somewhere that indicates X of Y secrets found. Having to wait for the Stats screen when you've finished is a bit daft, IMO. With loot you've usually got an explicit target to reach as an objective and you can see in your inventory how much you've found, but not so with secrets. Anyway, just a thought.

It's a grey area. The game was designed with particular technology at the time, and players didn't mind it wasn't 'realistic' enough. It felt like an actual place in their heads (I was there too ;) ). And they don't mind now, it's a part of Deus ex experience. As such it's minor thing, not really worth it. Who are you to make such changes, if you're not the author?
Dev_Anj on 30/1/2015 at 16:17
Maybe not worth it for you, but I always felt like I would like these locations a lot more with more detail and with it being made closer to a real life location. They clearly think that remaking the Paris metro in the style of actual Parisian metro stations would be interesting, so they're doing that. Is it wrong?

What would Wright's brothers think if I turned their Flyer I into a Boeing 787, and without permission?
bassoferrol on 30/1/2015 at 16:52
I meant Wright brothers, sorry.
