But I don't think Fian was complaining about the difficulty of lining up one single shot and hitting what he wanted to hit - as I read it, he was talking about wasting rope arrows by firing them into wood surfaces, climbing them, and then discovering that it didn't help him at all. That's the sort of exprience the training missions don't give you.

I can't relate. I never had such experiences. I don't expect something to be found most of the time, and there are other pleasurable reasons to explore.
"Running out of rope arrows" and "limited uses" don't sound like "not finding stuff up there often enough".

I don't think that rope arrows and climbing gloves are equal - you can't use a wooden beam in the middle of the room to reach some upper area :)
On the other hand I disagree that DX:IW and TDS were "thoughtless sequels", actually scripts, plot ideas and the readables for both games are great. What is arguable is the gameplay quality.
And speaking of things that might be considered an improvement, actually I find climbing/mantling in T3 much better than in T2. All you have to do is to look at the ledge so it is in the center of your screen and there you go :)

Mantling? Yeah.
I would expect Thief 4 to make it look easy.

Unfortunately we don't have enough feedback from the devs to finally clear up all these things. Anyway, I agree with the final conclusion about climbing; and I always think of Assassin's Creed – no, that's not the usual it-looked-cool-so-why-don't-we... argument, but I mean the way this guy grabbed beams, single stones etc.. Make it a little more challenging (like that you actually have to control Garrett's hands and feet or something different), quite a bit slower (and thus more realistic) and finally not too ...erm... über-human (sorry for the language rape).
I agree with this. The climbing in Assassin's Creed is GREAT for the first 10 minutes of the game. After that, it just becomes frustrating, you realise it's just jumping onto a wall, then leaning the movement stick (or whatever you used) forward and watching some fancy, gimicky animation while Altaïr takes his time climbing up a building. It really spoils the pacing of the game. And becomes frustrating when you want to just travel somewhere superfast without having to think, and then it just slows you down, yet it's not some challenging fun thing where climbing up is just a fun thing to do and you become immersed.
However, if the climbing was like Assassin's Creed, the placement could help (since linearity ISN'T BAD WHEN DONE RIGHT). Kinda like Half-Life 2, where they would use something – not climbing, obviously – but just something to quickly slow the pacing (as I mentioned, in Assassin's Creed, the climbing slowed pacing, however, it was when the pacing was NOT supposed to be slowed). It could also be used to increase tension, you have to climb somewhere and an enemy is chasing you, but there's a large wall you must climb. The climbing could be implemented as a puzzle, like in Uncharted.

If he's wall-climbing and the lighting is low, it should be the same as wall-hugging. More archers or AI with ranged attacks near prime wall-climbing spots would be good, too. But I mean this in the context of a more natural wall-climbing (expanded mantling) not climbing gloves.

Deadly Shadows had some great things going for it. Sure, I'd be happy.
I would prefer a 3rd Person option, for one. Just because Garrett is a beautiful character, and after seeing him in DS, I'm just not sure I could go back.

All the mystery about Garrett is that he stays hidden even from player’s eyes. Show him and you lost 50% of the mystery.

Goodbye T1/G/T2!:(
I hate 3rd-person more an more with every sad excuse to keep it.

For the record, I'd be fine with either.
I just tend to like 3rd Person, regardless of its faults.
