Nothing really to do with the current Thi4f since we dont really know anything about it, but I was just wondering something.
If Thief 4 didn't have a single player mode but instead was a complex multiplayer game (NOT an MMO) based off of single-player Thief 1 and 2 but with some new gameplay elements as well as modern graphics and modernised pre-existing gameplay elements (think of a cross between The Dark Mod and Thievery UT) would you be happy with it?
I certianly would! As long as it had Thief 1 and 2 sized levels as well as different game modes
and maybe an optional solo-mode.

Pretty hard sell for me. I do like games like UT and Thievery, but Thief is much more of a single player experience for me. Rich in story and the like. I suppose Left 4 Dead managed to make a great story experience with multiplayer, but its gameplay is much simpler. Also, I always views Thief as having a main character; with L4D and the like, there is no main character, but rather many.
It could be done I suppose, but I would definately be surprised if it was ever pulled off.
Thi4f could include a multiplayer mode, though. Both coop and competitive Thieving. Me and a friend used the coop mod for T2 and competed for the most loot... we attacked if we saw each other. It was awesome. You always have a fear of running into your oppenent, much greater then running into guards.

Thats what I mean, it'd be fantastic to compete against a thieving rival.
Your right about the story experience though, the single-player stuff really lets you immerse in the world and the sub-plots of the levels.

I'd have no reason to like it. All reasons for liking Thief as a game would be gone.

i like thief as a single player game however the only reason i like single player better is that i never have the opurtunity to try multiplayer.:(

How would it be different than any other multiplayer game? It wouldn't be anything that sets Thief apart from other games. It wouldn't be very Thiefy at all. Most players in multiplayer games are playing as barely sneaking, heavy killing, run'n'gun thieves anyway.

Thats pretty presumptious :p.
An MP game of Thief played right would still have to be stealthy considering the limitations on Garrett in the gameplay, such as the awkward melee and limited amount of fire, gas and broadhead arrows, as well as the speed and strength of most of the enemies compared to Garrett.
Now just because you (JTR) personally don't like the idea doesn't cancel out the appeal to others, you and Zachary have never tried multiplayer Thief, and you would probably enjoy T2 in MP if you got the chance, presuming you still treated it like normal Thief.

Balance adjustments would be necessary, otherwise e.g. the players' tools would be twice or four times as many as in singleplayer, BUT if this was handled thoughtfully, it might work. The only thing remaining that's not thievy then would be the fact that usually you do business on your own. Heck, I can even imagine more challenging multiplayer modes like only one player can pick locks or has a bow. It could all be used to avoid speedruns.

I wouldn't buy it if it was MP only. I never play any MP games.
I hate playing against cheaters and MP games are ALWAYS full of cheats with aimbots (or whatever the Thief equivalent would be)

Well yea, for co-op and stuff.
But competitive thieving wouldn't really need that.
