I most likely wouldn't like Thief 4 if it was multi-player only, but a possibility to play with other players in some way could be interesting. I would still expect Thief 4 to be mainly a single player game though...
Now, almost everyone seems to associate "multi-player" with "deathmatch" or something like that, and while that would indeed be an awful idea, I think that a co-op mode with one or two other players could actually be really fun. If you could play the whole story together with your friend(s), that would be even better. :)

...or they could pull a Portal 2 and make an entirely seperate coop campaign with its own story that fits in the unverse. Garrett may be the best, but he's far from the only.

A specific 2 person co-op campaign has the potential to be awesome though.

Yes, I took this into account, it comes under "about everything" clause.
But I was also thinking in the old school mode... everyone-a-dial-up, and MP meant dragging hardware (those bulky monitors :/) to your friend`s house. Friend who knows the score. These days - dedicated server and a hookup thread somewhere here.
More like jtr7 says, it could work as a mod, not any Thief4MP malarkey.

I can imagine cool, fascinating, exciting MP versions of Thief (although I'm doubtful they'd catch on with a wider audience), for instance the two-player co-op suggested earlier, but I wouldn't get a Thief game that is only, or even predominantly, about MP. I'm too much of a SP guy for that.
