after seeing all the comments,i think it would be a interesting idea if the story was the have multiple paths, where by doing one thing or another leads to a different path's for garrett,it could have a path for each faction and a solo path, also a flashback path that shows the prequel to thief 1

Probably because it's not a stupid position. Unless you can show me a cutscene where the final glyph burns a scar in Garrett's hand, the only thing that supports
your theory is your imagination, yet somehow we're supposed to accept that as fact just because Father Plat says so.
I think I should rest my case now. When I said that one needs to ignore everything between the beginning and the end, even I didn't go this far in my assumption. EVERYTHING. Including the first part of the final cutscene where that exact thing which you refuse to believe happens, happens.

Which still doesn't change the fact that Garrett calls himself a Keeper, and the fact that you're trying to pretend that this doesn't happen.

So why does Garrett suddenly have a key-shaped burn on the back of his hand if not to acknowledge his status as a Keeper? Because he thinks it looks cool and will impress the ladies?
Garrett had that key tattoo throughout the game. You see it when he lock-picks. Perhaps all Keepers get them after they 'graduate' from training.

the true garrett is first person view, when thief 3 came out that third person was just one of many ways they wanted to sell to a bigger market
ok so lets settle this so we can all enjoy the board
garrett was once a keeper, then he left, but not for good as we all played thief 1/gold/2 and 3
ok lets get to the meat of my point,in thief 3 garrett had to prove his trust to the keeper in order to be able to look around at books, just cause he put the glyph in the slot at the end and he has a keeper mark on his hand does not mean he is currently a keeper, the story is clear on that.
also i believe the reason thief reboot was a disaster is due to the fact at the end of thief 3 to continue story would have been next to impossible as most factions lost and power they once had,i think they feared making fans mad so i think the entire reboot idea was them trying to play safe, but in the end they made a game for the kids of today who need a wrist strap to guide them though game
i hope another company gets thief and makes the proper sequel
so final thoughts, thief 1/gold garrett already left keepers and in no part of the story did he ever return as a true keeper, same with part 2 and 3,if anything the keepers needed garrett to do things they could not do,i actually lost a bit of respect for keepers in thief 3

What the story is absolutely clear on is that Garrett refers to himself as a Keeper at the end of the game.

well since there is no thief 4 we will never know if garrett goes back to the keepers,as what is there for him to stay for all the books are blank, keeps now hold nothing
there would have to be a massive story to fix what happened at the end of thief 3,my logical guess is the hammers will take back control over all,i think there was one hammer i would like to see explored more, the one that garrett meet to discuss the hag,i always respected the old hammers, but those young ones ruin it for the rest :P
also i am not sure of the situation with the pagans after thief 3 each they got there paw back but otherwise they dident do much in thief 3 as far as story
not to sound bi-est but i think thief 4 should have revolved around downwinder/pirates,and garrett traveling a bit more from mission to mission then you have alot more to go off of then the classic location garrett has pretty much done every way possible
the day garrett goes back to being a full time keeper is the day dewdrop like mechanist lol
i still think taking the best elements from thief fan missions and making a story around it would be better then a triple 1 title ,imagine 1 mission released a year, and say complete game could be say 10 missions,so 10 years ,very possible

I just realized one possibility. The dialogue in the end of Deadly Shadows is different from the dialogue in the beginning of the Dark Project. Everyone knows that. (And almost everyone accepts it) Garrett never says anything about needing the little girl's impressive skills of not being able to pick pockets properly. That difference is not meant to reflect his absolute unwillingness to suddenly change his life and adopt a child. It's meant to reflect the presence of a choice. The prophecies are no more. Unlike Artemus, Garrett is not compelled by a written future to do anything. There is no great destiny about to spring from that meeting. It's one of the first real choices in an unimaginably long time. That's why it was left blank. From that point onward, anything can happen.
Well... anything that can properly be explained, that is. So I think we can rule out things like phase-shifting the universe from elemental to atomic.

But he does recognise her talent. Like the keeper in TDP recognised Garrett's talent, despite him not being able to pick pockets properly.

That was obviously not the point. What's important is the difference between the scenes. The parts that are missing. Garrett doesn't talk about a need for gifted individuals. He does not offer a different way. He doesn't have to. He isn't the final piece of some millenia-old failsafe plan anymore, and neither is the child. Garrett has a real choice now. The future is not chosen in the story, because it's no longer written.
Maybe I finally understand the position of the other keepers. Why they never wanted to interfere. They didn't want to influence the events laid out in the prophecies. That was the job of the true keeper. The one who nobody but Gamall knew was Garrett. That's why even in the beginning of TDP, Artemus did not actually choose Garrett's fate for him. He left that illusion of choice for Garrett himself. Even though they didn't know about Garrett's true purpose until the end, they would have still known his choice anyway.
