If Thief IV had to be in the future, could a 1930s-like setting work ? - by Petike the Taffer

So... Which City faction shall be introduced as a corrupt power that needs dismantling/destroying? If the City Watch hadn't been tackled in TMA, the gangster stuff of the '30's would've worked with a corrupt police force, bought by the mob. I still say the Baron (or equivalent) and his seat of power could be explored more.
Exactly. :thumb: But besides that, a parallel plot with the main Thief villains teaming up or something would be interesting as well... ;) Hm, but would they actually be able to team up ? They're all mad, but each has a different set of morals and different agenda...

Oh, this would be brilliant! Imagine the soundtrack it would have - industrial jazz and ragtime. I really want to see this made.

I already have an idea for a potential intro... :)
Based on this :
(

But altered to fit Thief, of course... Here's my idea of a "screenplay" for the opening cutscene :
The City at night. Zeppelins hovering above tall skyscrapers, Hammerite temples and factory chimneys. Cut. Facade of First Bank and Trust. Slogan : "Catering to the financial needs of the city's upper crust." Cut.
Office of the bank's security service. Close-up on a radio playing some jazz-like song mixed with Hammerite chants (:cheeky:). Cut. Guard taking a nap in his chair. He suddenly wakes up, startled, thinking he heard a noise. Picks up a flashlight and pistol and walks into the dark corridor. Cut.
Room with the bank's vault. Close-up on two lockpicks and a stethoscope at work... ;) The vault code is cracked. A shadowy figure throws a small bomb in it, short-circuiting all the electrical systems in the vault, and carefully walks in. Cut.
Night guard approaches the main entrance and stops for a while to listen. Cut. Hand with raised blackjack. Cut. Guard humms a tune and turns around, aiming a flashlight at the mysterious man. Garrett. The guard jumps to the alarm switch, and presses it, but gets blackjacked immediately. Cut. A small mine flies to the foot of the entrance door, clicking. Cut to dark. A swish of a broadhead fletchette. Cut.
Cops rallying outside the entrance. Explosion. Typical grungy intro music like from the previous Thieves. Garrett sprinting out of the building and into the streets. Cut. Rifle muzzles. Shots. Cut. Grapling hook hits a skyscraper ledge. Cut. Garrett running on the roof, policemen in tow. Two shots from sawn-off shotguns. Cut. The cops are out of bullets, start reloading. Cut. Garrett turns to them, picks something spherical from his belt and holds it in his hand. Cut.
Policemen in surprised awe. Cut. A quick swish and bright flash. Cut.
Policemen rubbing their eyes. Another swish, something hits them on their heads and throws them unconscious to the ground. Cut. Garrett's hand catching a cross-shaped modern boomerang. Cut. Grapling hook hitting another ledge. Garrett swinging on a rope from one builidng to the other. Cut. Cops with flashlights finding their buddies lying on the roof. Cut.
Garrett looking in his loot bag (like in TDS). Cut. His hand, with a Key symbol on it. Cut. Packs the bag and turns around. Shot slowly moves above his silhouette, with a storm beggining above the City. A flash cuts the night sky, fadeing the picture into black and forming the title...
Thief IV : The Dark Taffer Returns... :cheeky: :cheeky: :cheeky:

You know, so long as we don't have an Eminem-like character running about, I'll be fine. I have no clue why the series was bound to go in that direction. It's as if they were trying to turn Thief into Grand Theft Auto, ditching the character types and atmosphere for no apparent reason.

As I stated at the beginning of the thread, the series really should remain in a medieval fantasy setting. Maybe not with Garrett as the central protagonist anymore, but with the same style, atmosphere and immersive gameplay as in the previous three.
The whole thread is meant to be a speculation on how a Thief game based in a more future setting could be done well and subtly, without becoming a mindless killfest...

I think an early 20th century China setting would work. There was an odd mix of clothing and weaponry. Horses but also a few automobiles. Enough factions to make things interesting. Could be architecturally cool.

That's not a bad idea, but China is visually and culturally too distant from the European-like setting of Thief. You would have to create entirely new characters, factions, fictional creatures... everything. And base it on elements of Chinese history, mythology, folk tales and literature instead of European stuff. Maybe it would be a great game, but it wouldn't be very similiar to the original Thief series.

Just because you let yourself be inspired by it doesn't mean you have to go all the way. I think the most interesting thing about nuth's idea is the mix of old and new:

Make new things look old, as if they've always been there, even if it is what would be considered a modern invention. Realize new things in old ways.

For me thief is magic because it is carried out in a special medieval world. As i try to bring that world closer to today with my imagination i see that the magic is gradually lost.
So i would sugest if there is any technological evolution in thief 4 world it should be in the same medieval time as all the previous games.
