If Thief IV had to be in the future, could a 1930s-like setting work ? - by Petike the Taffer

Now that Gruliac has seen the above world, and was captured by the City Watch, who knows? It's one loose-end TDS never addressed in the slightest...did Gruliac make it back home? Was he deemed truly mad, even though he could show the others a glimpse of the above world, if only they would follow him for a few minutes to humor him? Or would they assassinate their "head sick" king, and count 4 for their dead leader?

PI missions are the tricky thing, really. You can't have them be just like Thief missions, but dialogue trees for bullshitting your way past servants and whatnot is too un-Thiefy. Maybe do it like a Thief mission, but rather than death or mission fail if you get caught, you get beat up a bit, and move on to the next mission, and when the location is revisited you have to deal with heightened security/minor map changes/you don't know the location of the item you need to get. And servants aren't alarmed at your presence, because you look enough like a real police detective that they don't know the difference. Private security and actual cops know who you are, and don't like you mucking about in their business.
Oh, glad you brought this up, I wanted to mention more about the concept. My idea about the detective parts was not centered on conversations and whatnot, but on more spy-like work, a quiet investigation of sorts (because Garrett has to stay in secrecy, right ?). The pocket camera and other small, non-combat gadgets would come in use here. And, to be honest, the detective parts would not work as real missions, but as occasional sections of certain missions. Or when you need to walk around the city streets and not be too suspicious to the cops and fellow civilians. Mind you, it's more natural to wear a dark or grey cloak and cowl/hood while walking around a medieval town, than doing the same in the modern era (mainly if modern mass media are easily emerging). Garrett would need to hide his identity of a professional cat burglar, so he would apparently need to wear a trenchcoat and hat to play it undercover. Sure, maybe he'd interrogate someone from time to time, but the game would still concentrate on breaking in, ghosting, stealing the loot and getting out safely.

Or they could put Sherlock Holmes and Garrett into the ring. :cheeky: Some of Conan Doyles's stories are sufficently twisted, I think.
Haha, Inspector Drept could become the Sherlock Holmes of the Thiefverse ! :) Investigating haunting cases of a serial killer called "King No One" (equivalent of Jack the Ripper) and yet another urban legend about Mrs. Gammall Grey, famous chemist, who supossedly invented some sort of weird glyph-enhanced potion, turning herself into "The Hag" (think "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by R. L. Stevenson). Oh, and while we mention Holmes... Karras as Professor Moriarty, anyone ? ;)
Oooh, and don't forget the planned expedition of professor Challenger (of the Wieldstrom Museum's branch of paleonthology) to find the fabled Lost World, teeming with mythical prehistoric creatures like Burricks, treebeasts, giant spiders, cobra beasts... even intelligent "missing links", such as the Apebeasts and Craymen... :laff: :cheeky:

Who knows... They seemed to be pretty dissilusioned in general... :(

Ooooh, lookie lookie :
(

The older fansite members probably know of it, but I'm new, so I was surprised. I haven't read it yet, but it seems to be a Thief-inspired novel set in the 1930s. :)

Hey, since we're in the mood for messing with the universe, has anyone ever considered making a Thief traditional game? Dice+character sheets stuff? I'd play it.
this is completely not a thread hijack.

There have been attempts to convert Thief into various pen & paper type RPGs, and many other kinds of games. After a couple pages of discussion over game mechanics, rule derivations, and an open invitation to play, it's never brought up again. And then someone else gets inspired....

Well, they should fix the architecture and not make skyscrapers so boring like we did. Huh...

If it absolutely has to be in the future (or more modern) then I would rather see a post-nuclear war scenario similar to Fallout 3. :)
Or around the 19th century would also be nice.

The first thing that came to my mind when I read the thread title was Nolan's (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482571/mediaindex) Prestige (when it comes to art direction), so the end of the 19th century, actually. But 1930s also seem good :)

Umm, post-apocalyptic vaccumpunk... I dunno, splicing an already elaborate fantasy world with a very different, part sci-fi setting, would be a little too much... :p A nice goulash, but I fear it would be overdone...

is anyone getting serious enough to start a collaborative campaign, like T2X? I don't have any Dromed skills, but I would love to help with the project in any way I could (plotting, writing, art, graphics, etc)
