If you had to choose one... - by Kin

Its for PC, XBox360 and PS3 isn't it? It would be pretty tough to get FMs developed on PC to work on all 3 wouldn't it? And lets not forget bugs and whatnot. Eidos would have to pick FMs and make sure they are optimised for the console versions. Valve did it with the PC Portal FM DLC pack for XBox360 (that was free for PC :cheeky: ).
Anyways, I think we are asking a bit much from them here. I'd love an editor but I see why a console owner might think meh.

As (
http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/154188/ps3-owners-get-first-user-created-ut3-map/) did Epic for UT3 on the PS3 a couple of years ago. And then, of course, it became possible for modders to (
http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/PS3Mods.html) do it on their own. So, sure, it might take a good amount of dev effort to provide this sort of tools, but there is a precedent.

Line of thought to which a PC player will also say meh. If the devs/publisher are targeting the PC as a solid deployment platform along the other two, as I suspect may still be the case with a franchise like Thief, rather than a mere afterthought, then an editor on the PC version is a valid and possibly worthwhile pursuit. Off the top of my head, the latest and most noteworthy example would be Fallout 3.
As for the poll itself, as said before, it's a no-brainer -
on here, everyone, or almost everyone, will opt for an editor. Including myself. It's also worth pointing out that, like the OP said, this is what
we'd prefer, it's highly unlikely that EM would be putting the problem this way, since the two are very different bowls of soup. Also, if anything, a multiplayer component would stand to benefit from the existence of modding tools.
That said, I'd rather expect ThIVf to ship with neither.

Hopefully it wouldn't be a choice between the two, but editor all the way.

Hopefully they won't bother with multiplayer at all. :) Okay, after the SP is done, they can work on it...

Well, TDS finally came with an editor & it's crippled, frustrating, undocumented, and some features are hidden (like the ability to view and edit brushes, volumes, and other archetypes), and the 3ds max tools are incomplete and undocumented like the ragdoll exporter which requires a havok plugin which is not available for 3ds max 5.1. There are havok plugins for max 6+ but it's not doing us any good.
If the T4 editor is anything like T3's then, well, we'd still use it. BUT an SDK would be miles beyond anything the thief community has received before (with the exceptions of extra levels & meshes provided by mystery dev).
For me I'd choose an editor AND an SDK.

Fair enough I suppose, but then I would refer you to the current thread on this very subject. I think you might be missing out on a really good time.

E D I T O R !!!!
I don't mod but I know that every game with strong mod support has a longer shelflife and better recognition of the brand as well as more satisfied customers that create addons and publicity and that FOR FREE. Games that come with editors, tutorials and mod-support in any way are support-worthy and it should be rewarded by the players. One of the many bad things in the handling of the Bioshock franchise by 2K.

This is neat. I think the voice of the community is pretty clear on this issue. I hope EM is paying attention.
"We really want an editor."

They would be if this was the main forum I suppose. But no, we are the twisted cousins of the Eidos forum crew where 1/3 of people want MP.

It's probably not a big deal to EM (though they have included us), but TTLG was always given special thanks in the credits. :erg:
