Just found this after exploring a link that GBM had posted in ComChat:
(
http://users.pandora.be/a-p/valdor.htm)
"The old hospital "Le Valdor" was built in 1889. The castle-like building in the front hides a huge monastery with kilometers of corridors, cellars and attics. Although the building is completely empty (except for some chairs) it is possible to locate the dormitories for the sister-nurses, the waiting lounges for the patients, rooms, laboratories, consultation -and operating rooms."
...
"I had gone inside and opened a window to look outside when I heard a loud bang just behind me : the draft had slammed the door ... and it had no handle"

Wow, those are some cool buildings!
Reminds me a little of an old abandoned hotel in my Dad's hometown of Yale, Oklahoma. It was called the American Hotel. I always wanted to explore it, but it was a deathtrap.
Built in the 'teens, I think. Supposedly everybody who came through Yale back then stayed there. Wasn't anywhere near as big as these places, 4 storeys and maybe 100'x50'. But still kind of creepy in that turn of the century way.
I was actually kind of sad when they finally tore it down. Yeah, it was dangerous as hell and only housed a few critters, but looking at it you could tell back in the day it was beautiful. They just plain don't build like that anymore.
I always wondered about who had stayed there, where they had come from, where they were going. For some reason that old hotel always sparked my inspiration. I even wrote a really bad story about it when I was about 14. :o

a friend i have is a shutterbug and showed me a few of the urban exploration sites he frequented. after a bit of planning we visited an abandoned cement factory that had partially burned. how a cement factory catches fire i dont know, perhaps an oven got out of whack. man that place was a deathtrap. holes and spikey steel everywhere, then more holes covered in grass filled with spikey steel. nifty and creepy though. moans and groans of building whatnots, the thrill of trespassing, and being on the lookout for freaked out bums and other weirdos will get your heart going! some of the places those guys venture into i wouldnt without packing a pistol least of all some tools and rope. man could you imagine getting trapped in a prison or nuthouse. one locked door behind you and your doomed....doomed
doomed

I had found one shot that was exactly like the cradle out there in internetland...but I can't seem to find it.
It was an orphanage, too. I gotta find it again...
