I do appreciate FF VII, but yeah, FF VI any day of the week over it. Not that I'd choose FF VI as BEST RPG EVAH, but it would certainly be on my top 10 :)

Eh, I don't give much weight to these lists save for the fact that it's a nice way to remember classic games and even find cool games you never played before.
