Make sure you start with the Training Mission. Several things work differently than the original games, especially lock picking and object manipulation. Black jacking is also trickier.

Yeh, I learned that the hard way. I saw the endless lockpicking, then I thought I came across a buggy mission.
Gave up, on the following day tried another one - same.
Then I found the answer on the web :D

Hey, I picked up Thief GOLD because The Dark Mod was offering it for free. I have since completed Thief GOLD and have now downloaded The Dark Mod, and honestly, as pretty as it is there are a few things that are off putting. For instance, I don't like the way the blackjack is handled AT ALL! Also, the way you drag someone after knocking someone out is done much better in Thief GOLD. These are minor pet peeves I have with The Dark Mod, but the one thing that has kept me from finishing through with the first mission, Tears of St. Lucia, is the long loading time after loading up a mission. Seriously, 5-10 min? My computer isn't a powerhouse, but come on it can handle the latest Tomb Raider pretty well at medium settings (with shorter load times). In a way, the long loading times short of ruins the experience for me, but who I am to complain? It is a free game after-all and it's pretty darn close to the Thief formula. However, I think I might just purchase Thief II: The Metal Age and play that instead and then move on to Thief 3: Deadly Shadows. I like the whole concept of The Dark Mod, but it honestly hasn't pulled me in quite the same way as Thief GOLD did, and I'm honestly craving more of what that entry offered.
If anyone wants to tell me how to fix the long loading times that would be great. I've search the internet for similar problems and have tried all the suggestions I can find. The game itself plays good, it's just that loading screen BEFORE the mission starts. Thanks much appreciated.

Amazon was offering it for free. We're simply helping support the Modding contest.

Can you elaborate? What exactly don't you like about it?

You either haven't played the training mission or you haven't read our gameplay manual on the wiki. Bodies can be carried in exactly the same way as you do in Thief. It's a two step process. First frob the body to grab it...now you can stop there and simply drag it to tuck it under something or you can then tap the 'use' key to throw the body over your shoulder just like in thief. What key 'use' is will depend what you have the key bound to.

I've heard of some video card settings causing longer loading times with the doom 3 engine, but perhaps someone with more knowledge will interject.
Might be better to come over to the TDM forums and air your feedback there.

TDM forum admin has not granted me permission to post threads yet and it's been a couple days. Also, I guess I will give the training mission a whirl. As for the blackjack, I just feel like guards react to suddenly and the impact of the hit just doesn't feel the same. Maybe it's just me or that I've just been used to Dark engine and not the Doom III engine. They are quite different after all. I'm not criticizing The Dark Mod and I think it's quite faithful to Thief, but I think I might enjoy a play through of Thief II before I settle with The Dark Mod missions.
