Im looking to start a new thief project. what do you think? (the future of TDP) - by WarCrysis

Hey Fellow Taffers! this is my first post under this username cause i havent logged in in so long i have forgotten my info... haha... BuT  im here. I just wanted to share my thoughts. I love thief TDP. beat it back in like 1999 when i was in like 3rd grade haha beat it at least once every couple years since then and i must say this community is awesome! the updates and game enhancments that have been made are amazing. you guys on here know who you are and you are doing a hell of a job keeping the best game every made alive! cheers
I just installed the NewDark Update for Thief Gold (I had the steam version installed but i do own retail original releases of all three games :) as well) and i must say the model updates are AMAZING.. the loot looks like something out of a modern game! very very fresh and its not jaw dropping amazing but i think its the start to something. as im playing threw thief i can see its old age catching up with it.. the status.. for example.. lol as classic as a lot of thief original is, its age is at the breaking point it think. with out these community updates idk if i would still enjoy it as much as i have been over the last like 6 years.. and they keep getting better too!
But now the reason for my post.. I am completely willing to offer my services and time if others on here are interested in my idea. I mostly have just done a little editing in dromed and played around making levels and stuff back in the day but i am 100% willing to pay for a website and run it. off what ever i can if others are want to join in on my idea. so here's my idea:
Thief 1 and 2.. maybe even 3 ( as frustrating as DS is GGRRRRR  ) could stay completely relevant and be better if updated. from seeing what i saw from NewDark and the HD texture pack coming there is potential here compile all of the enhancements and add in a massive many more new custom upgrades in one install pack/patch. I am 100% against changing the feel of thief, against changing anything with a negative impact on thief TDP or the other two. maybe #2... just a little.. idk if you can even touch anything in DS.. freaking DS.. Grrrr . There is one amazing mission in deadly shadows though :cheeky: i think you know what it is ;)
SO what i want to do to Thief TDP is
-Go threw the game and enhance the level's, things that are suppose to be curved we will upgrade them to be more curved, like the pip's and round edges that in 1998 seemed curved. but to day are just a bunch straight edges. like ladders and fence's. so one so on. also there are some cool things we can do as well. like in mission two down in the prison over in the hammer barraks by the kitchen (i wonder if i have time to stop for a snack lol) theirs a long hall way that turns right and goes no where but it looks like there was going to be something there but it never happened.. we could point out places like this in the game and add in a new area to fill the question of... Why is there a hall way here? :erg: with the ladders i think a new model is in order. maybe wood ladders and metal ladders who knows. probably just redesign the metal ladders to look more visually satisfying.
-Player Models is a big one to me. there weapons, skins, so on. a more rounded detailed and better looking existence would be a good upgrade. of course each one will need new texture's but we will make the closest exact look as presented, just a more realistic looking person.. or walking lizard.
-upgrade the HUD to be the same exact thing but more HD version of it! maybe make it less bright on the screen, not that it is now but i see newer high def texturing being a little brighter on screen and this is a dark game. :) also your weapon icons get a slight upgrade to be more detailed and look better but essentially the same. just more visually pleasing. one big thing id like to see is when you pick up a dead or unconscious body the view you see of you holding the body is on the same level of detail as the new model designs. as far as weapons go, well id like to see them be upgraded as well, like your arm inst so 1998 its more 2005... if you know what i mean.
-upgrade all the status threw out the game to be MUCH more detailed model's. But not different. the same thing just enhanced. also bush's and tree's, and random objects that have no use. lilke vase's and tables and just models threw out the game. chairs and stuff you know. to match what newdark has done with loot and usable items.
i think you can kinda see where i wanna go with this and TDP. its a perfect game. i want to make it even better with age by combining what's available and filling in whats not.
OF COURSE THERE ARE AUTHORS AND CREATORS OF ALL OF THE UPDATES AND I WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING WITH OUT PERMISSION!!
of course i would ask if they would like to all join force's. id create a closed forum and a web site. modding groups could keep there name's or what have you and we could all contribute to the cause if you know what i mean. That would be the best thing in my mind for this moving forward. we could have amateur newb's doing what they can being like look at this.. the more experience would say good stuff email that to me i think i can enhance it even more. it would be a community involvement with input from every member to make sure that the out come is THIEF not anything different.
Again its a idea i have and if anyone wants to help me start this project let me know. we could do such a good job we'd be in gaming magazines cause of the popularity of thief 4.. haha prolly not.. bringing thief TDP relevant to newer gamers that like thief 4, could expand this franchise this game and open it up to thousands or even more that never thought to try it or havent even ever heard of it but love thi4f. you can get it very cheap on steam! win win
Lemme know what you think of this grand idea. :)

It's entirely up to you to follow through on it, but hook up with the talent in the Editors' Guild and make sure you aren't needlessly redoing work already done, that way you can focus on objects that haven't been done, or maybe weren't done satisfactorily. I certainly hope you can bring the games forward into a new era, and exploit the power of NewDark for others' future Thiefy projects.

You are not lacking in ambition, that much is clear, but I am not sure how feasible your idea is,or how realistic you are being about it. If it were possible to go through the game and 'fix' things, it likely would have happened. The first question I think you will be asked, in addition to a healthy amount of skepticism, is what are you bringing to the equation besides time? A project of that scope will need a lot of talent, and a lot of organization. The idea and willingness to pay for a website wont cut it.

Right! thats why im here my friend. there is no way i could do this alone. but 10 experienced dromed editors. some people good at texturing and modeling. most of the items just need to be edited as they stand not recreated. there is already a lot of this done in various updates by various people whom all need to be contacted of course. whats left is all the items that where missed. a lot of things in theif repeat them selfs. you run in to one kind of vase for example lol. only small edits to the map need to take place. its really about how many people are willing to help out. other wise it could take me so long to finish alone the game will be practically dead by the time i release it.

"HD" models for charakters and objects are not possible
the simple reason is that the engine cant handle it
on the other hand there are many "improved" models and textures floating around here and the bigger texturing projects are in the making right now : D

Um... NewDark removes the polygon limit or at least sets it ludicrously high. You can have enchanced characters now.

We have to find a balance with atmosphere and visuals imo. Too much hd enhancement will emphasize the limits of the original (flat geography, npc clones) and in the end result, the players will rely less on their imagination. There is a great article on Quake somewhere about how if games simply own their existence, nobody questions the rules of their universes. Overcompensation, meanwhile, draws scrutiny to simple flaws, or speaking more broadly about game design, fundamental premises. There is no such thing as perfection, but a creation can be either immersible or self-conscious.
Go nuts though! I'm eager to see what can be accomplished.

It is not going to happen. These ideas tend to crop up every so often (four or five times a year, something like that), but I have not seen a single one that got further than the concept/early screenshot stage. That's because these ideas invariably come from people who underestimate their tasks and overestimate their editing abilities (not talent, but, say, the ability to put months and months of work into a project), as well as others' time and willingness to contribute.
I would suggest that you should first build a single, complete, medium-sized mission on your own. Make it the quality you are aiming for here. See how it works, learn the tools, see how much time specific tasks take. After you are done, you can make a more realistic estimate whether you can embark on a mega-project like you propose. And even if you won't (spoilers:
which is very likely), you will have a new mission to show for your efforts. Which is much, much better than a discarded prototype.

I think that you're going to end up giving this "project" the same level of energy and attention to detail as you do to your grammar and spelling.

No, wrong, no. NewDark only raises the polygon limit on
terrain. The only polygon limit on 3D models is in the model conversion program, not Dark. We've had high-poly, high-resolution AI models in Dark for years--
