Based on the (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/16/the-boyz-are-back-in-town-goblin-camp/) RPS review, I tried out (
http://www.goblincamp.com/)
Goblin Camp.
It's sort of a simpler Dwarf Fortress, in which you construct a settlement for a bunch of fantasy dudes and fight off threats, but the design addresses a lot of the gaps that DF has: it's open source, designed to be easy to mod, has a much more limited simulation depth. For one thing, there's no insane z-axis, though there are some hardcore types already clamoring for it. And there are no plans to implement individual limb physics or whatever.
Best of all, it's fairly easy to figure out, especially when compared with DF. The menu system is very clean, and the game is largely mouse-driven, but with decent (though imperfect) hotkey support.
Here's my first camp after about 30 minutes of trying things out. I couldn't get anywhere near this far with DF after reading a Wiki and watching an introductory video:

Indeed it is! There's also a (
http://crawl.akrasiac.org/tourney11/) mini-tournament on until the end of the month.
Perhaps nicest of all is new and improved browser support. Just point your browser at the (
http://tiles.crawl.develz.org) webtiles server, and check out one of the tutorials.
Two things to note on webtiles: it's not updated to 0.9 yet (soon, they say), and the server's located in Germany and can be a bit slow in the western hemisphere. The installable version is probably better to work with, and I prefer it, but one major benefit to webtiles is that you can have spectators tag along to give you advice. Or laugh at you.

It might be worth noting that Thomas Biskup, the author of ADOM, my favourite roguelike of all time, finally got off his lazy ass (j/k, I love him so much) and started working on (
http://www.adom.de/blog/index.php) JADE again some time ago. You can download the extremely early versions from his blog. It's pretty basic right now.

It is definitely worth noting that.
JADE has been a long time coming, and ADOM was extremely promising, and even now has a faithful following. It would be great to see ADOM get expanded upon in JADE, and I hope it happens. I'm a huge fan of Crawl, but ADOM brought forth a
world, not just a dungeon.
Also, if anyone gives a carp, webtiles has updated to 0.9. It took a few extra days. Try it out now: (
https://tiles.crawl.develz.org).
edit: and of course, it goes without saying that
Dungeons of Dredmor, a very graphically pretty roguelike, has come to Steam. Good for beginners, tough for middle players, perhaps a bit disappointing for hardcore pros. All in all, a good step forward for the genre.

Shit, I remember playing ADOM just before I started college. That was a long fucking time ago. Maybe it's time to revisit the past. ADOM was always something special.
