DoD bought and installed. Gave it 30 minutes before work this morning and it seems promising.
Not sure I have the stomach for the ASCII games, big whore that I am.

Hey I just came across this thread wanted to mention the new Dwarf Fortress came out a couple of weeks ago (11 months since the last version) and it's got a raft of improvements, mainly for adventure mode. There are going to be a series of updates probably over the next few weeks. New features include becoming a vampire, werebeast (procedurally generated types e.g. wereskinks) or a necromancer. All these things are based on a scripting language so you can make your own custom lycanthropy/polymorph diseases/drinks etc, and the like.

Yeah, I've been playing DF's new release since it got a working Lazy Newb Pack, and it's wonderful, although maybe vampires are a little too frequent at the moment. Mind you, I usually identify them, turn them into miners, then use them to breach volcanoes to get my magma plumbing started :)
I had one mad incident with a fortress with a Weretortoise.
Yep, a Weretortoise.
It arrived, the pop up informed me I would now understand why I feared the night, and I laughed my ass off.
Then the fucker waded into my fortress, chewed a dwarf and died. Unfortunately, every full moon after that, bitten dwarves would "Turn", chew on whoever was near, and in no time I had a severe dent in my population and a trio of angry chelonian dwarves.
My own little Rabbit & Tortoise fable with a Dwarf Fortress spin.
