Yes, not sure if my comment came out like honouring your workplace loyalty over a real friend was ever a good idea - as I don't think it is an option.

I guess at least if you're a born manager you'll be so oblivious that you won't want to kill yourself for being a born manager.

If the friend is logging in, being paid, and not actually there doing the work....that's time theft.
It's up to the manager to decide how to deal with it, and it's your friend's responsibility to accept the punishment for cheating the company out of wages he didn't earn.
It's not a matter of loyalty to the friend or the company, it's a matter of common sense. Friend or not, you don't aid criminal activity...especially when you're close to the manager and could end up incriminating yourself.
I don't understand how anyone can see this as a gray area. lol In the first place, it's the friend who jeopardizing the friendship by being a thief.

Sure, sure believe anyone who you DON'T KNOW WELL ENOUGH (which is most likely lying or having and agenda of their own), instead of a trusted person, and see how it plays for you in the long run (better said a short run, maybe very short with back stabbing people like that one).

Well this 'friend' got him the job in the first place, so possibly something is owed there. Just a suggestion.
We've suffered from dipstick slackers before now and fired them, having given them more than reasonable time to turn their act around, and some of them do you know. But I'd be very interested in some kind of update?

no you won't, you'll delegate it to someone actually competent and then take the credit
