In b4 Cease&Desist - yet another SS2 remake effort. Lets talk about fan remakes! - by Yakoob

I've said a couple of times in various threads that If I were ever to do a fan remake of something I wouldn't try to remake the whole game.
SS1 is a very big game. Look at the Black Mesa guys. I was really excited ... in 2008. to play it. I've been holding them up above all the criticism but I've really started to have my doubts the last couple years. By the time they release it, It makes me wonder who will care? I probably wont play it (if it gets released) until HL3 comes out and I play through the whole series.
I had an idea to make a series of little videogame vignettes. I'd love to redo Beta Grove in a modern engine with all the bells and whistles, I've got some pretty spectacular Ideas for it. It might take an hour to play through, but you've got this little re-imagining of a piece of the game, and who knows, people might even like it. Shorter Dev time, and much more dense in terms of detail, narrative, and gameplay. The short story of videogames. From there on, you've got some serious dev props and maybe pitch your own idea.

I want to see someone remake Heretic a la Doom 3. I know there was that Hexen fan game, but everyone seems to write off Heretic as just a Doom reskin.

Good game though.

Haha well, yeah... but it also has a lot of potential if it were expanded in a remake with modern bells and whistles. Taking that fantasy setting but not making an RPG. Expand on all the interesting weapons and bizarre inventory items while exploring war-torn fantasy cities and dungeons... I'd play it. Thinking about it, it would probably end up as a fantasy version of Rage. Not a bad idea imo

In many ways Quake 1 is something like that. Obviously very ancient by now, of course.

Yeee-es, kinda. Just without the magic eggs that turn bad guys into chickens.

It's not just kindof, its nearly entirely fantasy setting just with guns thrown in and some tech here and there. Considering the original plan for the game by John Romero it's not that surprising.
As awesome as Quake 1 is and always will be, I'll always wonder what it would have been like if id would have let John make the game he had envisioned and not gone with what brings in the $$$ the most at the last minute. I know that's how the world works, but I wonder what would have been because if you look at it, besides Commander Keen it's been 110% pure FPS games for id. The mark of any good games company is diversity.
Mind you I absolutely loved Quake 1 to death when that came out with all that said. And god damn there was some excellent machinima for it. About the only time I ever got into that stuff was with Quake 1. My life was never the same again after "Blahbalicious". Which if you've never seen you owe it to yourself to watch atleast once ((
