I have no doubt there is not one member of this community who does not wish all of our French friends the deepest condolences for the appalling events in Paris today. We all feel your pain, confusion and outrage, and grieve with you in this, your time of suffering
Our hearts, thoughts, love and prayers are with you all, taffers or not
Such events are unexplainable, why would anyone consider such an act, what do they expect to gain ? I have no answers, but I do know one thing your motto is liberte, egalite, fraternite, and it is by this belief you live your lives, and it will be through this being you will heal

Let us not forget that this was done by fanatics and not the average muslim.

So anyone reading this thread months or years from now won't have to use their psychic powers to know WTF fortuni is talking about:

I don't entirely get why this should be a time of suffering for all the French people. This is precisely the kind of group thinking that allows fear to grow and crystallize. While I get the idea that a symbol of freedom of speech was attacked today (and I agree to some extent), and while I completely agree with the fact that massive homage to the victims is due, the current situation with the media feels like we are told, as a people, that we have been hurt: "This is our 9/11 because we tell you so".
In fact, being afraid, being afflicted in our national pride should not happen. We've got enough circlejerk going on right now, and now the internet is going crazy with everyone rallying (often hypocritically, especially from people who openly loathed Charlie Hebdo) under a common banner, ready for a crusade*. A crusade to do what exactly? Not much is different, except that radical islam is going to become a topic under more scrutiny and less taboo.
I apologize for shitting on your thread, especially because it is heartfelt. I'm mostly venting here out of frustration for what is happening in the French media and social networks at the moment so please don't take any of this against you. I just feel we need to be wary of loading the event with undue symbolism.
On a more personal note, I am deeply affected by the loss of two that were among the victims, cartoonists (Cabu and especially Charb) who were very important to my late teenage years and shaped to a large extent my sense of humor. This sucks. Apparently they caught the people responsible, thank fuck if that's true.

Or alternatively, we should make more of an effort to remember the victims of this brutal assault on freedom rather than fall over ourselves to absolve "moderate" followers of a religion founded by a delusional child-fucking psychopath.
Without religion, there can be no religious extremism.

Amen SD. I say that in honor of freedom of the press we all tell Mohamed to suck it. These asshole zealots have no respect for the laws much less the institutions of the civilized society they are living in. It was an attack on the free world I want by the intolerant world I can't stand. Religion in general needs to back the fuck off. If I hear one more neanderthal tell me a human footprint was found in a dinosaur one I think I'll whip out my pecker and pee on them. I'll say God commanded me to piss on the first dumbass I came across.
Sure, sure, the US can't say anything. We waterboarded. We invade. We try to fix things and screw them up worse. But at our worst we still run our loud mouths like free men. This was an attack on all peoples right to do so. In a way it was an attack on this forum because this forum lets us say any fool thing we want and get called on it the correct way- a verbal beat-down by other damn fools.

Atheist extremism doesn't exactly have a stellar record, either (Stalinism, Maoism). I am definitely more concerned with extremist fanaticism than whether their particular delusional fantasies are religious.

Indeed.
Religion does not have any kind of monopoly on crazy idiots willing to go to insane lengths to further their cause.
