In the interest of Nostalgia, what would make a multiplayer game 'Thiefish" to you? - by thiefinthedark

I'm not sure how Thief would work in multiplayer, as the concepts don't match. The thief that we've played as been a solitary one, there only seems to be a sense of teamwork for guards. If gameplay focused on the guards it wouldn't be thief... I don't like the idea MMO's that much, and graphically won't it be difficult to have a FPS set in a MMO?
Perhaps a time trial game type could be made, a mission is presented (the theme of the mission can be as varied as any FM) and a player must do the mission in the quickest time whilst completing all the objectives (and not failing certain ones). Game play could be made more difficult by adding more AI on the player getting caught, and escaping the mission should be standard (so a player can't make a quick escape if they alerted everyone under the sun). A player could do the mission with a time and someone else then plays the same position to beat the time (or a scoring based on time taken and loot taken). Maybe a mission could be split in two with both sides identical, so both players play at the same time - being able to see what the other player has currently scored.
Then there's more obvious ideas based on CTF, where someone steals a piece of loot whilst keeping their own loot safe - reminds me of the thieves guild, one side had the safe the other side had the key.
I'm not saying these ideas are brilliant - they clearly aren't, but I don't think thief and multiplayer match...

What if it were possible to remove the typing (or rather, the reading of the typed text from other players) for inter-PC communication? I'm not thinking of VoIP solutions, but of only communicating with characters in line of sight by macroed emotes.
Actually, one of the things i have yet to throw in there is that communication is limited to a Radius around you. There is no "global chat" per se, merely a series of whispers that can be picked up by any character within 5 feet of you, normal decibal speech that can be picked up within 15 feet, and shouting that can be picked up within 30.
All still text-based chat, of course, but a more realistic solution than talking to someone across the map :P

Just an update, the 100% final version of the Design Doc has been posted in the first post of the thread. Feel free to peruse it. :)

I'd like to take a look at it, but after downloading the document it turned out that a) it's a .doc, which is a bit unfortunate, because I don't have MS Office, b) it's only 2kB and seemingly empty.

Haha! I got the same error as before! Damn you, typo!:D

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
TAKE THAT FOOLISH FORMAT TYPES AND HTML CODING!
I saved it as an HTML page. Lost alot of the fancy formatting, but at least you can read it and see everything now. Presentation is second to good design anyways.
So now, link works as outlined in first post, and you don't have to download stuff!

What a pain for you! But yeah, it's working. Good stuff, there. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Its my pleasure, really. I have to thank you all for the input you all gave, much of which was quite helpful in putting together the final document.
While right now it is, of course, merely a pipe dream on paper (and a very rough outline of one at that!) i hope that i can get the skills and funds together one day to make it a reality. The thief community was a huge boon to me wanting to get into the industry in the first place, and i would love to somehow give something back, even if i have not been the most visible member here over the years.
So enjoy reading something that, i truly hope, will one day come to fruition.
But not in Dromed.

My thanks as well.
We would of course be interested to hear if you're granted that scholarship.
Best of luck!
