Why would someone pick him for Garrett's role? That person must be out of his/her mind! He's too much of a good person. IT'S DISTURBING...
So he can't smell like old meat... e gads, the movie IS ruined... :( (actually serious!)
...But there was this one pic, that DID resemble Nicholas Cage.
Here it goes: (

Look close. See what I see. You know I'm right...
But still, the movie couldn't be cool and draw money from the crowds, (Depp would change this, ofcourse... How about as ConstantPayne instead? ),
unless they could make it in an original manner. Like adding the cutscenes from the game (remade versions of course), just as in movies where they chapterize the plot by writing stuff like "Day 7" or somesuch after a scene (Pi, Memento, Seven Days (if memory serves)). Just as if the movie would had gone through a mission or something.
And the plot can't be used in full, or the movie would be like 6 hours long, so as above was, having a small Bafford-thingie with the Dark Beat going on would make the point from the beginning, and then there could be a small interference with the Wardens, to which someone gives a way around as a 'one last big heist'. And then Garrett gets betrayed of course, so the movie wont end in a heavy paycheck, but in a heavy payback.

the character needs to be english, the guards in the game speak in a english accent, garrett should have a mild english accent, but too gruff to tell either way, like in the game! what about orlando bloom, hes done similar roles such as in lord of the rings. and hes done physical work before. he should be alright whiles hes in shadow and a cloak

No. Any and all movies based on games have failed, and have been a total disappointment to the fans. The only way they could do the movie is to do it completely in CG, in the style of the cutscenes from the game. Then it would be great. No actor could play Garrett, and no other actors could play the rest of the cast. It just wouldn't work.
Valkyre on 17/11/2003 at 17:58
Oh, and if they did in fact make a movie with real life characters, they would have to get unknown actors and actresses. It never works with famous celebrities, because people have type-cast them already.

Odd that after all the time I've spent reading these boards, this is the thread I decide to join the forums to contribute to. :joke:
Anyway, I believe that a Thief movie COULD work. The key is in the setup and pacing, not to mention the actors. And as I've already selected Charlie Sheen to be in a Half-Life movie ( :laff: ), I'm not sure he'd be available. Hugh Jackman seems just a bit TOO rugged to me... Viggo Mortenson works fine for me.
Now, to the setup and pacing. Burying the viewer too deep in Garrett's past, or spending too much time with him doing small jobs, would bore the viewer early on- bad move. What would work best (IMO) is if the movie opened up with a series of flashbacks narrated by Garrett- his youth, being found by the Keepers, splitting off, and a few of his earliest heists. Show enough to frame Garrett as a master thief, not very tough but extremely clever and quick.
We'd pick up the story just before Garrett prepares to enter Constantine's Manor for the Sword. We'd have to deviate from the path of the game in order to give Garrett more on-screen speaking time- if necessary, develop a new character as a contact/equipment supplier, and even make the character female if we need to develop a little lighthearted romantic tension.
The pacing needs to be fairly quick. In the Manor, Garrett would prefer to stick to the shadows, blackjacking only when necessary. (I'd like to see him stick to the 'no killing' rule the game imposes on Expert, as a matter of professional pride.) Good set design in the Manor would be a must. Once done there, we would shorten the section where Garrett gets the four stones- maybe spend a little time in the Lost City- and move on to the Cathedral. Now HERE is where there can be plenty of tension, some combat (Garrett one-on-one versus a Haunt for some good fighting thrills, Garrett winning through wits as much as swordplay) and those CGI special effects people love so much. THX sound systems would do a wonderful job on the voice of the Eye.
Here's where we hit a quandary. When Garrett returns with the Eye, does Viktoria take his eye? And if so, do we have a one-eyed Thief for the remainder of the film, or do we shift events around and have Karras give him his mechanical eye early along with the fake Eye?
The Maw of Chaos could be revamped... with today's CGI, things could look REALLY warped. The endgame (the Trickster getting nailed by the fake Eye) could be a bit different, though- the mechanism could be damaged during Garrett's trip through the Maw, and with him having only a single fire arrow to trigger it, he would have to plant the fake Eye, elude detection, find a safe spot AND hit the fake Eye from a distance, at exactly the right time.
Oh, and while we're at it let's make a more involving ending than the original Thief game had.
Well, those are my ideas.

I will be damned if I will ever hear Garrett speak with an English accent. Remember, we are not talking true Medival times here, it is a sudo-steam punk middle age. It's not out of place for people of all accents to be there in the city, as it's not a real universe in the first place.
I like Garrett just the way he is. When he has an American accent, he sounds confident and capable, if not quite a bit Arrogant. With a British accent, I would be afraid of him sounding snooty or snobbish, and without projecting the capability factor.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think Brits are weak or anything. But when I imagine a British Garrett, a smart assed thief that really doesn't like to fight but will make snide comments behind your back, I just can't help but picture Hugh Grant in a cloak.
And that image chills me to the very core...

Ahh...can't...resist...being...sucked...in...to...topic...
Futile as it is. Thief was not a big enough seller, there are tons of other "A-list" games in front of it begging for production.
But here's my 2 bits:
Viktoria: Monica Bellucci!
Constantine: Anthony Hopkins or Patrick Stewart.
Garret: Tom Cruise He's young/old enough, definitely can do the arrogant/sarcastic thing. Can do his own stunts and is a tough enough seeming. I also like the Johnny Depp and Viggo ideas.
Hoopz on 17/11/2003 at 23:04
Ed Norton might be okay... but Milla Jovovich??? Monica Belluci?
We need people who can act, you know you just want them because they are 'hot'.
